As Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) for Munich Reinsurance Company of Canada (MROC), you will be responsible for the underwriting at MROC and at Temple Insurance Company (Temple) as well as all non-life classes of products (treaty, facultative, direct and MGA) and all lines of business (property, casualty, surety).Direct reports to this role include the VP, Casualty and Surety Treaty; VP, Property Treaty; AVP, Business Analysis; Director, Underwriting Pricing; Director, Underwriting Operations; Senior Specialist; and Administrative AssistantThe role in detail

  • Act as member of the Senior Management Team, providing leadership, underwriting strategy and overseeing the efficient operation of the underwriting departments
  • Hire, develop and retain a top talent, high-performing team that is fully engaged and recognized as experts internally within Munich Re and externally with clients and partners
  • Develop, follow-up and implement underwriting strategies and implement them through the use of authority delegation to ensure sustainable portfolio quality and risk-adequate pricing
  • Drive the application and implementation of Artificial Intelligence, data analytics and new technologies within the underwriting process to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen Munich Re\'s core capabilities and drive enhanced client interactions
  • Adhere to all regulatory and internal underwriting requirements; establish, maintain and review underwriting guidelines; provide technical advice to underwriters
  • Analyse economic trends and gather market information to identify and capitalize on opportunities with respect to risk selection, business management and development of new ideas and solutions for product development together with client teams and the clients
  • In cooperation with client management, develop and grow a profitable book of business and exploit new business potential while achieving annual plan targets
  • Maintain superior industry and market profile through active participation in conferences, associations, panels and speaking engagements; maintain close business relationships with peers at client companies and within the industry
Qualifications
  • First and foremost, you will demonstrate strong leadership and achievement, a strong work ethic, enthusiasm towards change and a drive to make a difference.
In addition, we are looking for the following qualifications:
  • Advanced university (or other business) degree in combination with an insurance designation
  • 10+years of progressively senior experience within commercial underwriting lines of business and non-life reinsurance business
  • Expert level understanding of least one of the P&C core lines of business - preferably in the main Property lines
  • High level of client orientation and value generation
  • Familiarity with the Munich Re steering, monitoring and budgeting concepts
  • Fluent in English; German and French language skills would be an asset
  • Proven history of creating, growing and sustaining a strong productive team
  • Keen strategic thinking, business acumen and problem solving skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and social skills across all levels of the organization and drive to network across the Munich Re Group
  • Willingness to travel and to represent the company at market bodies as well as headquarters
