The Opportunity
McElhanney Ltd. is looking for a Survey Assistant to join our team in Fort St. John, BC. This is a great opportunity for a dedicated individual who enjoys working in the great outdoors and is looking to gain hands on surveying experience. Working closely with collaborative Field Supervisors and Party Chiefs, you will be a key player, assisting our survey team to provide our clients with industry-leading survey solutions that are cost effective and timely. The successful candidate will be involved in a wide variety of municipal, construction, and oil and gas surveys.
In this position, you can expect to learn the principles and correct use of survey instruments while working alongside experienced staff who are eager to share their knowledge and expertise. At McElhanney, we invest in developing our people and actively train assistants to become Survey Party Chiefs, offering financial support to those pursuing formal education to advance their careers. You'll build valuable skills in reading and interpreting survey and construction plans while working in a collaborative team environment that values individual strengths and encourages professional growth. In addition, McElhanney operates one of the largest privately owned RPAS (drone) fleets in Canada and provides comprehensive training to help team members achieve pilot certification.
The ability to travel and work out of town for extended periods and pre-employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing are required.
What You'll Do
Set-up and operation of conventional survey and GPS equipment.
Follow directives received from Field Supervisor or Party Chief to assist survey team.
Prepare accurate field notes, when required.
Clean and maintain equipment, maintain supplies, stock company vehicle, and ensure necessary physical resources are available in the field, with minimal supervision.
May be required to use tools and equipment such as chainsaw, axe, sledgehammer, shovel, metal detector and survey tripod to complete assigned tasks.
Some projects involve remote work that require working up to 21 days away from home.
What You'll Bring
A high school diploma; technical diploma and previous experience is an asset but not required.
Physical ability to lift heavy equipment.
Willingness to work in varied environmental conditions, including wildlife populated areas and in remote areas for extended periods and varied hours.
Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted driver's license with a clean driving record.
Ability to travel out of town for up to three-week periods.
Good written and verbal communication skills, and general computer knowledge.
What Can We Offer You?
The wage range for this position is $20 - $26 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual's education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
