The Program:





Interdependent Living Services (ILS) is a community based independent living skills program. Typically, the young people receiving services have complex needs that include social competency deficits, developmental delay, mental health, and emotional/behavioural problems. The goals of the program are to help young people increase their adaptive skills to achieve greater independence. The program provides a graduated system of independence and flexible supports based on developmental, emotional, and mental health needs. Supports can be increased or reduced based on youth needs.

The Position:





The Supportive Roommate model is a unique model of service in the Interdependent Living Services Program designed to provide youth and young adults with housing and support with daily living skills. Supportive Roommates are contracted staff with the program. The contract is specific in its expectations and falls within established agency and Children's Services standards of care. The role is non-taxable providing that the young person resides in the same home and shares the kitchen (i.e., is not a 'stand alone' apartment). Young people are referred to the program due to their higher needs that include mental health issues, developmental delay, FASD, and behavioural challenges. The goal of the program is for them to develop the life skills necessary to live independently in the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:




The Supportive Roommate is responsible for providing live-in monitoring and maintaining the Service Plan of the young person. This includes, but is not exclusive to, daily living support, home maintenance, making and keeping appointments, monitoring and administration of activities, flexible support for individual needs, and ability to respond to emergent issues as necessary including crisis management. Development and implementation of appropriate routines and structure within the home. Provide meaningful and responsible role modelling, as well as direct teaching in areas of social skills, daily living skills, and community integration. Identify and act on goal-related teaching opportunities; use systematic plans of instruction, appropriate teaching methods and approaches to transfer information and skills. Select and make appropriate use of behavioural interventions and strategies. Monitor the Service Plan and provide timely documentation or incident reports as required. Work cooperatively with all members of the treatment team. This includes regularly generating reports and facilitating case team and planning meetings. Initiate and facilitate regular communication with family members and natural supports. Be responsible for securing relief/respite that are screened and approved by the Agency. Must model appropriate behaviour for the young people and display the morals, values, and judgement requires to live independently. Must be willing to seek pre-service and in-service training, as well as evaluation procedures. Must provide Hull Services access to the home.

Qualifications and Skills:




Related post-secondary education in Human Services or Social Sciences. Multiple years of experience working with complex needs youth who may struggle with mental health, addictions, developmental delays, and social skill deficits. Multiple years of experience working in treatment settings and community-based settings High level of personal competence in the formation and maintenance of caring and therapeutic relationships. Ability to engage youth and families in the treatment process. Demonstrated interest, commitment, consistency, and a high level of personal maturity and responsibility. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Clear police check, which includes a vulnerable sector search. Clear Child Intervention Record Check. Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license. (3 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license). Completion of ASIST, First Aid, and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention as well as training in Indigenous teachings and diversity would be considered an asset.
