Job Description

Church Out Serving offers a "Home For the Night" to neighbours who are vulnerable and experiencing homelessness. The Support Worker (SW) will offer our guests a safe, warm, indoor place to sleep overnight, access to food and washroom/shower facilities, hygiene necessities and phone charging ports.

We are currently looking to add 1 full-time or 2 part-time SW positions for overnight shifts, beginning November 1 or sooner. The SW will have a heart to serve the most vulnerable in our community with compassion, dignity and respect.

The SW will report to The Program Coordinator. For the safety of all involved, the SW will help to ensure that operations are conducted in strict compliance to homeless shelter policies and protocols by staff, volunteers, and guests.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES



The Support Worker duties include but are not limited to:

Preparing facility for guests, open doors, and welcome and register guests. Providing direct support to guests of the homeless shelter. Communicating effectively with clients including active listening and problem-solving. Monitoring guest activities and provide effective intervention in crisis situations. Safely resolving situations and responding nonjudgmentally to problematic behaviour. Working cooperatively and effectively with other staff, volunteers and guests. Staying current with guest files and the communication log. Conducting nightly intake and completing required documentation. Assisting with food distribution, clean up and laundry. Extending hospitality to guests. Maintaining a calm, safe environment, always referring and adhering to the homeless shelter's policies and procedures. Maintaining a clean, tidy environment. Completing nightly floor checks. Initiating de-escalation and crisis intervention protocols as required. Preparing continental style, take-out breakfast for guests.

Hours

: Night shifts 7:30pm to 2:00am, or 2:00am to 8:00am, or both --- 3 to 5 nights per week on a rotating basis.

Qualifications:



Bachelors' degree or post-secondary diploma in Social Services or Addictions preferred. Related work experience (2+ years preferred) with an emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness and/or social services. Solid understanding of issues facing homelessness. Knowledge of the homeless population is an asset. Solid working knowledge of conflict resolution and non-violent crisis intervention skills. Current First Aid / CPR certification is an asset, training provided if required. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. A current police records check is required. Preference given to candidates within short commuting distance. (30minutes)
