Job Summary

The Supervisor, Testing and Rail Quality is responsible for extending CN's rail life by maintaining the rail test frequencies and quality of rail testing. The role involves visiting sites along CN's network to carry out rail flaw detection, welding audits and procedures, investigate in-service rail failures and lubrication, or friction modifications. The incumbent will be required to manage both direct and indirect reports, and develop the initial strategy on how to extend rail life to ensure it's effective and efficient operation across Canada and the US.

Main Responsibilities

Rail Flaw Detection - 25%

Carry out daily reporting to ensure continued performance of vehicles

Run and review daily reports (4 to 5) generated per vehicle

Ensure reporting and billing is accurate

Ensure remedial actions are correct and that testing was carried out properly

Schedule vehicles and provide weekly updates

Participate in daily calls with Operators

Contact dispatch centers for any issues regarding track time

Welding Audits and Procedures - 25%

Visit sites to inspect and audit tracks, and ensure appropriate Track Standards are followed

Carry out dynamic audits of welders

Measure recent welds to ensure that they meet CN's established standards

Investigate In-Service Rail Failures - 10%

Carry out in-depth investigation(s), as necessary (e.g. rail breakage, joints pull apart)

Receive and study pictures from Track Supervisors and/or local forces

Determine the root cause of the failure, provide the details of the last rail flaw detection tape analysis, site analysis of track geometry, detail Rail Severity Index with Track Quality Index and provide recommendations

Write up synopsis and communicate to Regional Chiefs of Engineering

Friction Modification - 10%

Visit territories and carry out physical location and inspection of Friction modifiers

Ensure Friction modifiers are working as designed

Provide recommendations to Manager, Rail Testing and Quality

Carry out accounting audits to monitor grease usage and reduce expenses, where possible

Grinding - 10%

Check quality of the grind and functionality of grinding machines regularly

Schedule grinders

Approve daily invoices (e.g. water trucks, etc.)

Schedule Rail Inspection Vehicles (RIV)

People Management - 20%

Establish employee objectives and carry out regular touch-base meetings

Provide mentorship, guidance, support, coaching, and feedback to direct reports

Train and mentor new staff

Communicate company policies and goals to staff

Prepare and monitor development plan for staff

Working Conditions

The role requires frequent travel (80%) to field sites across CN's network both in Canada and the US. The role will be primarily performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences.

Requirements

Experience

Rail Flaw Detection, Welding, Grinding, Lubrication

Minimum 5 years of experience in rail flaw detection, welding, grinding and lubrication

o Data analytics

o Track maintenance or building*

Management

Between 2 to 3 years in a large organization

o Unionized employees*

o Production line employees*

Education/Certification/Designation

High School Diploma

Valid driver's license

Organizational Impact

Decision Making & Impacts

Daily decisions made by the incumbent have a direct impact on the vehicles and commodities travelling across CN's rail network, as well as its customer base. Decisions are made regularly which affect the safety of CN
s community and can be the cause of critical incidences if not made correctly or in a timely manner.

Level of Interaction/Influence

The Supervisor, Testing and Rail Quality's first line of communication is the Track Supervisor and Senior Manager Engineering on the Engineering zones. The incumbent also communicates regularly with the Chief Dispatcher, as well as various internal stakeholders, including high-level managers and Vice-Presidents across Transportation and Operations.

Employees Supervised/Organizational Structure

The Supervisor, Testing and Rail Quality reports directly to the Manager, Testing and Rail Quality. The role is responsible for managing 2 direct reports (unionized and non-unionized) as well as 40 indirect reports (contractors/non-unionized/unionized).
