The Public Prosecution Service is responsible for all prosecutions and appeals within the jurisdiction of the Attorney General.With the guiding mission of providing fair and equal treatment in the prosecution of offences, the PPS prosecutes charges laid under the Criminal Code and under Nova Scotia statutes such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Head Office is in Halifax and there are regional offices located throughout the province.The core functions of the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service are to:

  • Represent the Crown in the conduct of criminal trials and quasi criminal appeals before all levels of courts.
  • Participate in the development of criminal law and criminal prosecutions policy.
  • Provide advice to police in respect of prosecutions generally or in respect of specific investigations
For more information on the Public Prosecution Service please visit the following link:About Our OpportunityThe Supervisor, Support Services is accountable for the delivery of an extensive range of managerial responsibilities and legal operational activities to ensure the provision of effective and consistent legal operations within the PPS.Primary AccountabilitiesUnder the leadership and direction of the Director, Legal Support Operations and at times, broad direction from the Chief Crown Attorney, the Supervisor, Support Services works as part of the department\'s management team with significant independence and accountability to manage and support the efficient and effective operation of a several offices within the Halifax Region. This is achieved through day-to-day management of a broad scope of business and financial processes including: legal operations, performance management, attendance and absence management, recruitment and selection, performance planning and development, special projects and initiatives, and the development of new and revised legal and business processes to support the smart deployment of resources with the PPS.The Supervisor leads a team of legal support professionals tasked with supporting the varying operational needs of the Public Prosecution Service. The Supervisor is the main point of contact for all legal administration and corporate services needs of the Region, managing and monitoring all operational activities for staff while actively leading and implementing objectives and strategies to improve service efficiency and effectiveness, and ensuring alignment with core human resources, financial, business and administrative systems and processes.Under the direction of the Director, Legal Support Operations, the Supervisor works with fellow Supervisors as a key partner in influencing the development of the Service\'s overall mission, purpose and mandate of their Region and, more broadly, the Public Prosecution Service as a whole and is a critical part of ensuring the Service\'s effective operation. There is a need for continual awareness of legal and legislative changes and ensuring these are communicated to staff in a timely and effective manner.Qualifications and ExperienceYou have successfully completed a paralegal or legal assistant diploma or certificate from a recognized post secondary institution plus several years directly related experience supervising a team. An acceptable combination of your education and experience may be considered.You require proven ability successfully supervising a team including experience in recruitment and selection, training, performance and attendance management, coaching and developing staff to meet their fullest potential while ensuring service standards are upheld. You are required to manage a broad scope of business and financial processes including legal operations, special projects and initiatives, and the development of new and revised legal and business processes.You are decisive and effective at prioritizing and delegating tasks, including ensuring deadlines are met with little margin for error. You have demonstrated abilities to perform with minimal supervision, including being able to balance demands and time management in competing priorities over multiple projects.Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to provide sound guidance under stressful situations are required. Relationship building and interpersonal skills are critical, as you are required to interact tactfully and diplomatically with the management team, staff, the public, police agencies, accused persons, victims of crime, defence counsel and the legal community in general. This includes senior officials within the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service, the Courts, and other government entities.Demonstrated flexibility and creativity in problem solving, action management, team building, and staff motivation are required in this role. As the successful candidate, you possess strong analytical skills while working well under pressure.   • Regular travel to offices throughout the Region is required
  • Pressure to meet deadlines and ensure accuracy of work
  • May be required to work overtime on occasion
  • Work is most often completed in a comfortable office environment, includes travel by car, sometimes long distances
  • Exposed to disturbances and high emotions, some danger of physical abuse when dealing with angry and irate individuals
  • Need to concentrate on a variety of sensory inputs requiring due diligence and attention to interpret effectively and accurately while under tight deadlines
