Job Description

Under the general direction of the Superintendent of Operations for Solid Waste Services the Supervisor of Disposal Operations is responsible for the administration and supervision of the operation of the Brady Road Resource Management Facility (BRRMF). This includes leadership and management in the areas of solid waste disposal planning, cost effective operations, budgeting, staffing levels, safety, community relations and communications, environmental and regulatory compliance requirements. In addition, the incumbent acts in a leadership capacity to ensure that the facility Foremen, staff, and contractors perform work in accordance with budget and program requirements, and that all work is conducted in accordance with the provincially-issued licenses.

As the

Supervisor of Disposal Operations,

you will:


Provide ongoing management and direction to staff in the Disposal Branch in carrying out the daily refuse disposal, and resource recovery operations in accordance with approved policies, budget allocations, safety requirements, and goals.

Plan, design and oversee implementation of solid waste disposal and resource recovery program delivery improvements.

Be responsible for full time supervision of staff.

Ensure the timely preparation and participates in the administration of the Solid Waste Services Division BRRMF operating budget.

Maintain community relations and communications records. Prepares reports, statistical data, operating procedures and correspondence to provide information to management and the general public.

Perform other duties consistent with classification as required.

Your education and qualifications include:




Diploma in Technology from a recognized Institute of Technology, preferred.

Courses in management, accounting, supervisory, leadership is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Membership in CTTAM at the Technologist or Technician level, if applicable.

Must have courses as offered through the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), specifically - Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) within 12 months of appointment.

Additional post-secondary education directly related to landfill operations & resource recovery is preferred.

Four years of prior related work experience in landfill operations, resource recovery / diversion operations.

Demonstrated experience in solid waste management including: landfill operations, resource recovery, environmental monitoring, and compliance reporting.

Knowledge and experience in program planning of day-to-day resource recovery operations.

Ability to work effectively with all levels of management and employees of the Water and Waste Department, the general public, Councilors, and other City Departments.

Knowledge and experience in budgeting and program planning.

Ability to negotiate agreements with contractors, government agencies, and the general public.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

Ability to provide direction to multiple work groups. Ability to compile documentation and prepare accurate written reports.

Communications and interpersonal skills, including written and group presentation skills.

Ability to use a personal computer and associated software applications.

Must possess strong organizational and planning skills to plan, organize, prioritize and coordinate work and resources with a high degree of independence.

Working knowledge of the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

Ability to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.

* Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver's notice in force document upon request.
