Position Overview




The Supervisor is an experienced clinician who works under the direction of the Manager to coordinate the delivery of high quality inter-professional care and to ensure day-to-day smooth operations of the Medical Short Stay Unit. This is achieved through continuous supervision and coaching of team members to promote care that is patient-centered, timely and efficient. The Supervisor champions best practices, uses clinical expertise to lead an inter-professional team in quality and process improvement initiatives, and facilitates change to meet the needs of our patients and their families. The Supervisor is the first point of contact and resource for staff, patients and families. This position supports and empowers staff by contributing to the identification of learning and developmental needs and participating in ongoing training and orientation of staff in the unit of responsibility. The Supervisor develops communication strategies for the unit in collaboration with the Manager, and facilitates discussion between team members and other health care professionals to ensure consistent patient care across all shifts. The incumbent contributes to corporate initiatives and efforts to enhance Michael Garron Hospital's (MGH) mission, values and goals. Additional responsibilities may include performing tasks as delegated by the manager to support operations related to other areas within the manager's portfolio.


Primary Responsibilities




Patients:

Ensure all resources are aligned to deliver complete consistent patient-centered care:

Investigate complaints from patients and/or their families that need to be escalated beyond the care team members through to resolution Be accountable to ensure the team is functioning within an environment that fosters safe delivery of patient care Match patient care needs on a 24/7 basis to the needs and resources of the entire unit, other

departments and external facilities to facilitate care completion



Staff:

Oversee unit/team staff (e.g., RNs, RPNs, PSWs, et al.) as required, in collaboration with the

Clinical Resource Leader and department Manager

Ensure that all care team members are performing their assigned duties Anticipate and minimize organizational and unit-based barriers for staff to ensure there are no road

blocks which could impede patient care

Manage and monitor departmental trends with respect to unit-based planning and develop strategic plans across units to resolve problematic trends Collaborate with Human Resources to bring resolution to interpersonal and interdisciplinary conflicts amongst staff Participate in the hiring, performance management and practice support of the staff in the department, in collaboration with the Clinical Resource Leader, department Manager, and unit leadership across the hospital Participate in grievance procedure, collective bargaining process and other committees as member of management team Conduct or participate in staff investigations, administering required discipline and providing insight and recommendations on a variety of staff issues including attendance management, discipline and terminations Set performance goals for achieving maximum scope of practice, individual and team, and monitor progress toward same in the unit/area of responsibility In a leadership capacity, recognize and reward excellent performance Investigate and address staff performance against established goals in collaboration with the

Clinical Resource Leader

Develop communication processes within the unit/area so that gains from one shift are continued through all shifts Contribute to the identification of learning and developmental needs. Collaborate with manager, NPL and Human Resources to address same, implementing corrective measures Identify and celebrate successes in interdisciplinary team growth in the unit/area of responsibility Model and foster values-based behaviors



Operations:

Schedule and coordinate required resources daily to support the achievement of patient care access, delivery and throughput in the unit/area of responsibility Assign and/or re-assign staff and other resources appropriately within allocated budgets Ensure supportive resources are made available and maintained Contribute to the development and implementation of a culture of safety for staff and patients Recommend and collaborate on the creation and implementation of policies as they relate to the supervisor's area of responsibility Facilitate Unit Discharge Minute rounds, support patient discharge planning through team collaboration and supporting patient and family conversations.



Operationalize unit goals:

Translate and advance the goals (as described at the partnership councils) as they relate to the supervisor's unit/area Practice and promote continuous quality improvement among the inter-professional care coordination team Plan for and ensure consistent care processes and communication to support seamless operations around the clock Collaborate in the development and application of performance measures of patient satisfaction, staff satisfaction, and effective/efficient care delivery Model and encourage a culture where values-based behaviors are exemplified



Decision Making:

Make resource decisions involving staff deployment and supporting resources by day and by assignment in area of responsibility in response to patient/unit needs Assess and address staff performance-related issues and then liaise with Human Resources and Labour Relations as needed, escalating to manager where appropriate with recommendations Provide recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and terminations

Education




Clinical discipline Undergraduate degree BScN preferred from a Health Science or Health Administration-related program


Experience & Skills




Leadership experience in the field of nursing/healthcare 5 years recent and related clinical experience in an acute care role Demonstrated incremental healthcare leadership responsibilities 3 years' recent relevant supervisory/managerial experience in a unionized hospital environment required Demonstrated effectiveness with leading, mentoring, and coaching staff to achieve desired performance outcomes Experience identifying educational needs and contributing to development of learning plans and tools Evidence of ongoing education (e.g. workshops, seminars, etc.) and upgrading of technical skills and knowledge Demonstrated excellence in communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, and coaching skills including ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy Experience with performance management an asset Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to build relationships and engage teams in the pursuit of best practice and quality care Demonstrated ability to be flexible, organized, and self-directed within scope of responsibility Ability to demonstrate empathy, sensitivity, compassion and mutual respect toward team Demonstrated excellence in communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, and coaching skills Demonstrated knowledge of patient/staff scheduling systems, payroll systems, workload management systems Demonstrated computer literacy with competence in: ANSOS, Powerchart, Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, Access, OutlookMS Office suite of applications, and internet use Takes initiative and shows independent judgment Demonstrated ability to multi-task and, problem-solve with proven critical and creative thinking skills Evidence of ongoing education (e.g. workshops, seminars, etc.) and upgrading of technical skills and knowledge Excellent work and attendance record required All employees of Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), a division of Toronto East HealthNetwork (TEHN)
