Job Description

Pickering College is an independent day and boarding school in Newmarket, Ontario. The facilities supervisor is responsible for managing the daily maintenance, cleanliness, safety and security of the campus buildings and grounds, which includes supervising staff and ensuring compliance with regulations. They oversee repairs, cleaning schedules, and groundskeeping, and may also manage facility bookings and equipment maintenance. The role is a key part of maintaining a safe and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:



Ensure clear communication across shifts and within shift team.

Designated as "Custodian on Duty" and responsible for the shift phone.

Perform leadership role in the event of Emergency situation per Risk Management procedures.

Ensure that the team has cleaned and maintained their designated area of school.

Oversee work conducted on the shift and ensure that school policies and procedures are followed.

Provide feedback to employees on performance and deliver performance reviews.

Complete all tasks with minimal supervision and within timelines.

Exercise tact, diplomacy and confidentiality at all times.

Gain knowledge of the school's Mission Statement and support the Guiding Principles.

BASIC DUTIES:



Meet daily with the Manager of Facilities (or outgoing/oncoming shift Team Leader) to discuss maintenance requirements and ensure they are carried out in a timely manner.

Check Facilities email account and facilities calendar and distribute information appropriately.

Meet regularly with the team and Manager of Facilities.

Set-up or tear-down of functions/facilities when required.

Deliver job specific training to all new employees

Assist the Manager/Director with the scheduling and coordination of "heavy cleaning" ie. March Break, Summer and Christmas shutdowns

Plan, oversee and participate in heavy cleanings that take place during school closures.

Clean areas that are not designated to team and fill in when required

During the winter months, ensure that snow and ice are removed from all walkways

Provide input to Director/Manager of employee performance and/or concerns

Be familiar with the basic operation of all mechanical, alarm and monitoring systems.

Develop and maintain positive working relationships with the team

Develop and document cleaning standards and expectations

Develop and document department policies and procedures

Exercise tact, diplomacy and confidentiality at all times

Pickering College is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all of our students, staff and visitors. Unless previously arranged, the incumbent will remain on campus throughout their shift, ready to respond to all fire and health and safety emergencies. The incumbent will adhere to all policies and procedures as stated in the employee policy and procedure manual.

Time Parameters:



This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday afternoon shift (rotating on call weekends) Flexibility is required to assist with school functions and to carry out tasks that may not be completed during regular hours.

Qualifications Required:



Previous Supervisory experience preferred

Minimum of high school diploma

Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening

Strong leadership skills

Follow and model safe work practices

Must have building automation systems experience

Working knowledge of modern janitorial methods and equipment, preferably in a school environment

Hands on experience with general building maintenance

Able to organize and complete tasks in a given time frame

Good communication skills, both written and verbal (English)

Team player and able to work independently
