Job Summary

The City of Mississauga's Environment Section has evolved over the last few years, particularly with the approval by Council of the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) in December 2019. Under the direction of the Environment Manager, the Supervisor, Environmental Outreach & Stakeholder Engagement, leads aspects of the implementation of the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP), namely with respect to engaging with community stakeholders such as residents, community organizations, academia and businesses on climate change and environment-related issues. The position will supervise a small team to develop and manage community stakeholder engagement and outreach programs in addition to providing technical support.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position's key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and foster partnerships to support the implementation of climate change and environment-related initiatives and actions in the City as outlined in the City's CCAP and other City strategies and plans (e.g. urban agriculture, electric vehicles, circular economy and waste), in cooperation with community stakeholders (e.g. residents, community organizations, academia and businesses, private and public sector) and funders
  • Supervise and direct the delivery of stakeholder and educational outreach programs that support greenhouse gas reductions and contributes making the city more resiliency to the impacts of a changing climate
  • Plan and execute external stakeholder events, workshops and working groups
  • Direct and/or develop new stakeholder campaigns and programs, including program elements and outreach campaigns, including their promotion internally and externally and measure and evaluate successes
  • Provide strategic advice, direction and technical support and promote outreach programs to other staff members, Mayor and Members of Council, and external stakeholders and partners in furthering environmental and climate action corporately and in the community.
  • Prepare internal briefings, corporate reports and policies and procedures as required for senior leadership and Council
  • Represent the City on external committees dealing with various environmental and climate-related issues
  • Monitor and make recommendations on local, national and global environmental and climate-related issues which may have implication for the municipality
  • Drive consistent implementation of outreach programs across the organization that works towards creating a green culture and increase employee knowledge of climate change. Measure and track program results and successes
  • Create and manage related projects which drive continuous improvement and innovation
  • Provide content to marketing staff for the Environment Section's social media platforms
  • Responsible for operating and capital budgets related to engagement and outreach programs
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education from a recognized university or college in environmental studies/science, environmental/sustainability management, engineering or related field (a focus on climate change and education) or equivalent three (3) years work related experience
  • Minimum seven (7) to ten (10) years' work experience (depending on educational experience) with demonstrated experience in environmental and climate change principles, working with community stakeholders and in program and event development
  • Minimum three (3) years of leadership and/or supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated project management, research and analytical skills and in environmental and climate-related issues and related co-benefits
  • Ability to develop and implement environmental and climate-related programs on a variety of topics, including managing budgets, collaborating and partnering with a wide range of stakeholders, and understanding communication objectives
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills including strong presentation skills, report writing skills with the ability to liaise effectively with the public and private sector, elected officials and outside agencies
  • Demonstrated leadership, and team-building skills is required with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Experience and understanding of funding mechanisms, including community grants
  • Possess a strong network of environmental and climate-related community stakeholders, including a demonstrated high-level of business acumen
  • Ability to take on a leadership role and be proactive at resolving program or cross-departmental issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Understanding of communication tactics, including social marketing and marketing, to affect behavioural change
  • Strong planning, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Recruit, train, and coach staff for performance and evaluate staff performance using the performance management process for direct reports
  • Proven ability and proficiency using various computer applications such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint is required
  • A valid driver's license
  • Weekend and evening work may be required to attend community events, meetings and/or conferences
ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working within a municipal setting with knowledge of relevant City By-Laws, Federal, Provincial and Regional environmental laws, regulations, standards, policies and guidelines, including local, regional, national and environmental initiatives/trends/developments
