Position purpose:
Reporting to the Director, the incumbent plays a leadership role in developing and implementing strategic, branded, content-based marketing, sales, and communications plans and budgets to showcase PUO-UOP\xe2\x80\x99s bilingual publishing program of 25-30 titles annually, with a backlist of 1,500 active titles (print, digital, audio), to achieve revenue goals, enhance the PUO-UOP brand, and bolster the University\xe2\x80\x99s reputation, locally, nationally, and internationally. This person develops and deploys thoughtful, curated, data-driven marketing campaigns designed to stand out in today\xe2\x80\x99s book industry; develops dynamic events programming and knowledge mobilization initiatives; fosters strong media relations within mainstream media as well as in specialized fields; fosters strong public relations to grow our community of readers, authors, reviewers, book professionals, and other stakeholders; identifies and secures partnerships to further promotional efforts; creates exciting print and online advertising and promotion pieces, superior copy and metadata, and strong awards submissions.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop the annual and long-term strategic and integrated sales, marketing, and communications plans for our scholarly and trade lists and oversees its implementation by the Marketing team consisting of one FTE, sales and marketing agencies, and various designers, writers and translators, and others suppliers. These plans are designed to showcase Press publications and achieve, or exceed, revenue goals, foster engagement, build networks of customers, readers and booksellers, and enhance the reputation of the Press and its authors, as well as that of the University of Ottawa.
  • Develop the annual marketing budget, which comprises print and online advertising; website hosting, updates, and refreshes; a prolific events program; two seasonal catalogues and other marketing collaterals; and other marketing-related expenses designed to enhance visibility and sales. Monitors the budget and makes necessary adjustments throughout the year.
  • Manage all aspects of domestic and international marketing and sales for 25-30 new titles and a backlist of approximately 1,500 active titles, including advertising, promotions, publicity, print and digital marketing materials, galleys, awards, events, and exhibits. Solicits and manages sponsorships, partnerships, media coverage and reviews.
What you will bring:
  • University degree in marketing, communications, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience (equivalent full-time) in marketing and communications, including media/public relations, events coordination, or advertising and publicity
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management skills, to see various marketing and communications projects through to completion, working under pressure and around strict deadlines, budgets, and multiple priorities;
  • Bilingualism: fluency in French and English (spoken and written), with superior writing and editing skills in both languages
  • Superior public relations, interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills to engage with diverse groups (clients, authors, faculty, senior management, media, funders, sales teams, partners, etc.);
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic, metrics-based marketing and sales planning and execution
  • Superior problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Team player with demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Strong technical skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and database management
  • Experience working with confidential information
  • Ability to travel as needed to professional conferences and to meet with faculty at other campuses
  • Ability to work flexible hours on occasion, including evenings and weekends
