Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Vale Newfoundland & Labrador (VNL) Reliability, Engineering, Operational Technology & Excellence team has accountabilities to deliver cost effective asset performance across the Vale mines and plants in the province.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Superintendent, Engineering & Studies to join the VNL Engineering & Reliability Department supporting our operations in Long Harbour and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay, NL. This permanent position will be on a Monday to Friday schedule working primarily from the St. John\xe2\x80\x99s Office, with site visits as required to the Long Harbour and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay operations.

The Superintendent, Engineering & Studies will be responsible for supporting the operations in Long Harbour and Voisey\xe2\x80\x99s Bay. The candidate will be responsible for leading engineering services and studies for the Vale\xe2\x80\x99s Newfoundland & Labrador plants and mines, supervising a group of Engineers as well as Designers producing design engineering packages.

In this position, you will:

  • Accountable to lead and mentor a team of design Engineers, Designers and Coordinators to complete engineering designs and studies across our mines and plants in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Responsible for Safety, Schedule, Scope, Quality and Costs associated with engineering design and studies (in house as well as outsourced).
  • Responsible for integrity of designs produced under his or her technical direction and legally approves drawings as per the Professional Engineers Act.
  • Applies sound engineering knowledge and ensures all designs comply with applicable codes, standards and regulations, and are economically feasible.
  • Approves or reviews engineering estimates, drawings, calculations, functional specifications, data sheets, equipment specifications, scopes of work, FEL studies and detailed design packages.
  • Identifies and prescribes best practices for the operations as it relates to Service Newfoundland & Labrador (SNL) regulations and requirements.
  • Organizes development of new infrastructure studies for Vale\xe2\x80\x99s plants/mines.
About You

Education:
  • Undergraduate Degree in Engineering is required.
  • P. Eng.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a similar role.
Skills:
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Experience as a stamping design engineer.
  • Experience in planning and estimating engineering hours for design projects.
  • Experience writing equipment specification and construction scopes of work.
  • Understands and can apply risk assessment and Process Hazards Review processes.
  • Is familiar with latest codes, acts and regulations and keeps abreast of technology and latest developments in his or her design field.
  • Ability to work independently to achieve outcomes with minimum supervision.
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
