Overview:
Summer Student - Fort Simpson

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Maintenance Services Dehcho/Sahtu, supports operations and maintenance staff work activities with physical labour. Through this labour there will be many learning opportunities. May be asked to assist electricians and mechanics with preventative and corrective maintenance on gensets. May be asked to assist operations staff with routine engine maintenance (oil changes) and day-to-day operations activities. May require short trips to surrounding communities to assist trade staff with maintenance work. May be asked to complete basic grounds maintenance around Fort Simpson Powerhouse and transient buildings. May be asked to assist Maintenance Planner with data entry responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
• Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
• Assist maintenance staff with engine and generator PMs and corrective work. This will mostly be assisting with labor but depending on the task could include supervised repair work to be done by the student. This may include travel to surrounding communities in the Dehcho if it is agreeable for student, staff and parents depending on the age of the applicant.
• Assist operations staff with routine plant and genset maintenance. Observe how diesel power plants are operated. Learn how to take notes and record operating parameters of live diesel gensets. Ground maintenance around the powerhouse and NTPC transients. Day to Day operations activities i.e: shipping and receiving, custodial duties.
• Learn the health and safety program of an industrial workplace, how it is implemented to keep staff safe and why work activities are planned the way they are. Review of HSE paperwork so the student can understand how these documents actually work to keep you safe.
• Assist the maintenance planner with data entry and record keeping duties. The applicant can learn how we plan work, understand the scope of work we complete and how the data is carefully managed for future reference. The value here is helping the student understand how data entry and record keeping is used to actually implement maintenance activities in the field.
• Other general labour duties as required.


Qualifications:
Qualifications: • Current High School or post-secondary student. Must have completed a minimum of grade 10 and be age 16 or over.
+ Proof of recent enrollment/experience in the SNAP program •OR •
+ proof of enrollment in a relevant trade school for the 2025-26 school year •OR •
+ previous operational student employment with NTPC (during the school year, previous summer jobs, etc.) •OR •
+ good academic standing in relevant courses (e.g. shop class, technical education, etc.)
• Steel-toed boots are required.
• Team player with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must have a strong commitment to personal safety and safe working practices.
• Requires physical labour in operating and maintaining power generation equipment, fuel drums and other heavy material.
• May require some travel to the communities.
