About the Department of Community Services

The primary responsibility of the Department of Community Services (DCS) is to ensure the basic needs of individuals and families are met by providing financial support to persons in need and by protecting children and adults at risk. The Department of Community Services is committed to a sustainable social service system that promotes the independence, self-reliance, and security of the people we serve. This will be achieved through excellence in service delivery, leadership, and collaboration with our partners. Together, these programs and services form a secure and predictable social safety net for vulnerable Nova Scotians

Our Journey at the Department of Community Services

In order to better provide services and meet the needs of Nova Scotians, DCS is in the midst of a shift in how programs and services are designed, delivered, and managed province wide. The department is working to improve results and outcomes for income assistance recipients, persons with disabilities, and families (including children and youth in care).
We aim to:
  • Support Nova Scotians with disabilities to live as independently as possible in inclusive communities;
  • Support children in care and vulnerable young Nova Scotians to achieve their full potential;
  • Assist Nova Scotians to be able to live independent of income assistance; and
  • Modernize its service delivery approach to enable a more client-centric experience and service culture.

DCS will benefit from the fresh perspectives, ideas, and energy the successful candidate will provide. The Department will offer unique opportunities to gain exposure to government processes/practices and to the various elements of large-scale public-sector shift. The successful candidate will gain extensive knowledge of the public sector, social service delivery systems, government decision-making and communications, and other concepts relevant to their education.
