At the Department of Public Works, we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.

As the Financial Administration Student, you will gain practical financial experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified public service professionals. Primary Accountabilities

You will assist staff with financial and administrative duties, which support the highway operations and contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Division by:

  • Assisting with research and analysis;
  • Supporting staff with their daily work;
  • Database entry and support;
  • Organizing, filing, and preparing documents; and
  • Performing reception duties, covering the Secretary for breaks and time-off (includes manning a dual line switchboard, coordinating mail, printing invoices and directing visitors.
There may be opportunity for you to participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects or assignments; helping you further enhance and develop your skills.

Qualifications and Experience

You must currently be a student enrolled in Accounting, commerce, business administration or a related discipline and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

As the ideal candidate you possess:
  • knowledge and expertise in administrative processes, cost accounting, inventory control, accounts payable/receivable, preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports, budgeting and expenditure control;
  • excellent computer skills and proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing software packages and transaction processing;
  • strong interpersonal skills and an ability to provide financial services to clients and work in a team environment. Sound judgement is required for analyzing and interpreting operating and budget data;
  • organizational skills and the ability to prioritize your work; and
  • the ability to be flexible and open to working on a variety of tasks as required.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
  • Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day paid, working 8:30am - 4:30pm with two 15 minute breaks and \xc2\xbd hour for lunch.
  • Typically located in a comfortable office environment, occasional work in the maintenance bases may be required.
  • Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
  • Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
  • May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

There is one (1) position available based out of Bedford.

This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2024 with an end date of August 30, 2024.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $17.34 - $28.26 Hourly
