Position Overview

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Summer Research Assistant (7 positions). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts is seeking Summer Research Assistants in the Applied Geospatial Research Group (AGRG; www.appliedgrg.ca), reporting to Dr. Greg McDermid. This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) position. Depending on fieldwork needs, however, hours may not be traditional business hours and mutual flexibility is required.

General responsibilities for Summer Research Assistants involve laboratory and field support for research activities ongoing in the AGRG. Specifically, the applicant is expected to work as part of a team, with other students who are conducting research in the use of remote sensing and GIS for restoration of linear features in the Boreal forest. The work will be supervised and assigned by graduate students and researchers in AGRG.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist with vegetation surveys, drone flights, and RTK surveys in remote field locations in northern Alberta. Please note that the position will call for extended field visits.
  • Assist with field surveys, data handling, and image analysis.
  • Help with geospatial data analysis in the lab.
  • Support field logistics and preparation/maintenance of equipment.
  • Work closely with graduate students and other researchers.
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community.
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate reports-to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Coursework and/or practical experience with remote sensing, GIS, GNSS, and vegetation identification.
  • Familiarity with geospatial programs like ArcGIS, LASTools, and ENVI and/or field-survey survey equipment like drones and RTK would be an advantage.
  • Strong quantitative skills in remote sensing and GIS, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to work as part of a team.
  • A valid Class 5 driver\'s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn on the job.
