Position Title: Summer Intervenor

Location: Newfoundland and Labrador

Reports To: Early Intervention Specialist

Date: May 2023

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

In covering a broad range of duties, the focus of this role is supporting children, youth and their families in the Summer Intervention Program.

II. Essential Functions

The Summer Intervention Program is intended to meet four fundamental goals that are adapted to each child based on their individualized strengths and needs:

1. Prevention of Regression

Children who are experiencing vision loss and multiple disabilities show regression if they do not receive adequate stimulation while away from a structured learning environment. Interveners will provide stimulation for children to maintain knowledge and skills learned during the school year.

2. Obtaining New Skills

Interveners will encourage the development of new skills through activities developed for the child. Teachers and or Itinerant Teachers can offer assistance with these activities before the school year ends.

3. Encouraging Integration

A fundamental belief of Vision Loss Rehabilitation (VLR) is the independence and integration of individuals who are experiencing vision loss. The intervener will offer an opportunity for children who are experiencing vision loss to participate in their communities and integrate with other children. Integration also focuses on the elimination of inappropriate mannerisms and behavior.

4. Promote Independence

The ultimate goal of the intervener is to increase independence and improve self-image based on the child\'s needs.

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

  • Supports children and their families in the Summer Intervention Program
  • Engages with the child in meaningful and goal-focused activities
  • Maintains detailed and accurate documentation,
  • Regular communication with the family, and the Early Intervention Specialist
  • Actively participates in Summer Intervention Program training
  • Adheres to COVID-19 protocols
  • Maintains confidentiality of children, youth and their families
  • Conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times
Requirements

III. Qualifications
  • Experience working with children or youth with disabilities
  • Demonstrates organizational and time management skills
  • Sensitivity to the needs of children with vision loss
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • At least sixteen years of age
  • Clear certificate of conduct
