Hours of work:

Typical hours for this position fall between Monday and Saturday from 8:00am-5:00pm, with evening or weekend shifts throughout the summer for Town of Devon events. The position requires a flexible schedule to accommodate a work week of up to 37.5 hours per week.

Schedule Details:

The anticipated schedule for Town events include, but may not be limited to: Pride by the River (May 30 or June 13), Devon Days Kick Off BBQ (June 3), Canada Day (July 1), Downtown Markets (July 11, July 25 & August 15). The Leaders in Training program will be facilitated on an evening or weekend. Additional event days may be added or changed throughout the season.

Town of Devon Position Description



Title of Position:

Summer Event Programmer





The Summer Events Programmer is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing the Summer Shack program, assisting with the planning and implementing of Town events and take a lead role in coordinating the Downtown Market Series.


The Summer Shack is a drop-in recreation program offered twice a week starting in June and running until August that provides opportunities for children (under the supervision of their parents) to participate in free programming with games and crafts, facilitated by the Town of Devon.


Town community events that will need planning and implementing support will include, but not limited to, Pride by the River, Devon Days Kick Off BBQ, Canada Day, and Downtown Markets. This position may assist with other seasonal programming and events, including supporting Indigenous Relations Advisory Committee initiatives.


The Downtown Market Series provides local vendors and businesses the chance to get exposure in the community and showcase their products. On select Saturdays in June, July and August, the event will be coordinated with vendors, assign spots and be on site day of. Three markets are hosted per summer.


Additionally, this position will be responsible to assist with coordinating the youth volunteer program, as well as provide support to summer day camps as needed.

Key Responsibilities



Responsibility 1: Plan, organize, and implement Summer Shack programs



Plan drop-in style activities and prepare supplies so that the program is organized and ready to be implemented twice a week during July to August Independently facilitate all summer shack programs with minimal supervision Purchase all supplies needed to run programs Ensure participants' safety and manage any challenges that may arise with participants while running programs, as applicable Interact with parents/guardians to encourage them to engage with children Maintain a welcoming, friendly, and professional demeanor and appearance while representing the Town of Devon

Responsibility 2: Plan, organize, and implement Downtown Market Series



Connect with previous vendors to fill booths for each market of the summer and recruit new vendors, food trucks and community groups to participate Assist communications team to ensure regular promotion on social media and website updates with relevant information Attend each market to assist vendors in set up, trouble shooting and clean up Maintain a welcoming, friendly, and professional demeanor and appearance while representing the Town of Devon to foster lasting relationships with vendors and public

Responsibility 3: Plan and organize content for recreation program promotion



Work with the Community Services department to prepare content for the Town of Devon's Instagram page, and content to be shared on Facebook Create seasonal Instagram campaigns in line with community programs and events Work with the schools to promote recreation programs, as applicable, including school presentations with the Day Camp Programmer.

Responsibility 4: Volunteer coordination



Assist with Leaders in Training program to recruit volunteers and run the course during an evening or weekend in the month of June. Schedule & coordinate volunteers to assist with Summer Shacks Assist Day Camp Programmer in evaluating volunteers throughout and at the end of the summer Assist with planning a volunteer recognition activity at the end of the summer

Responsibility 5:Ensure health and safety procedures are established and followed



Identify potential safety concerns prior to and during program delivery Implement safe work procedures Complete proper safety documentation when required (e.g., incident forms) Ensure first aid kit is stocked with appropriate and current items. Ensure both staff and participants' safety while executing programs Follow all current Government of Alberta health protocols

Responsibility 6: Town Community Events Support



Attend & support community events as needed, often including evening and weekends. Event dates may change in advance and candidate will need some scheduling flexibility throughout the summer. Plan, organize and execute an element of each event

Responsibility 7: Evaluation of programs



Evaluate all summer programs identifying areas of success and areas for improvement Make recommendations for the following year

Responsibility 8: Provide back up support to summer day camps



Help Day Camp Programmer and Facilitator and fill in as needed

Qualifications



Abilities:



This position requires the ability to frequently lift and move tables and other event supplies.

Education:



Grade 12 Diploma Completion or enrollment in post-secondary education in an applicable degree program (i.e. Education, Event Management, Recreation, Early Childhood) Standard First Aid, and CPR level C Training in High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development will be seen as an asset

Experience:



At least 2 years of experience working with children and developing children's programming is considered an asset for this position At least 1 year experience with event support Demonstrated experience in program development, communication, and problem-solving skills Time management and priority setting skills Ability to take initiative for ongoing projects and new projects related to summer programs Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment Satisfactory Criminal Reference and Vulnerable Persons Check must be provided prior to starting.
