Substation Electrical Testing & Commissioning Engineer

Remote, CA, Canada

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Substation Electrical Testing & Commissioning Engineer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in high-voltage substations, protection and control systems, and SCADA/HMI integration, with hands-on experience in testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting across a variety of substation configurations (AIS, GIS, and hybrid).

You will play a key role in verifying engineering designs, ensuring systems are safely and effectively commissioned, and supporting project delivery from factory testing through site energization.

Key Responsibilities

Perform testing and commissioning of high-voltage substation equipment (4kV to 500kV AIS/GIS systems). Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) for protection and control panels, SCADA systems, and associated devices. Carry out relay testing, protection function verification, and end-to-end testing for schemes such as differential, distance, overcurrent, and breaker failure protection. Perform primary and secondary injection testing for current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers (VTs), circuit breakers, and protection relays. Support and validate SCADA and HMI signal integration, point-to-point testing, and RTU/IED communication checks (DNP3, IEC 61850, Modbus). Review and verify engineering designs, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and control schematics to ensure accuracy and constructability. Troubleshoot and resolve issues in control logic, protection circuits, and communication systems during commissioning. Prepare and maintain detailed test documentation, reports, and as-built markups in accordance with project and client standards. Collaborate with design engineers, construction teams, and client representatives to ensure successful project delivery. Ensure compliance with safety protocols, industry standards, and utility requirements during all testing and commissioning activities.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. Minimum 3-8 years of relevant experience in substation testing and commissioning. Proven experience with protective relays (SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, etc.) and related software (AcSELerator, EnerVista, DIGSI, etc.). Familiarity with SCADA and HMI systems (Ignition, SEL HMI, or equivalent). Strong understanding of protection schemes, substation automation, and communication protocols. Ability to interpret and work from engineering drawings, logic diagrams, and control schematics. Knowledge of utility and IEEE/IEC standards related to substation protection and control. Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills. Willingness to travel to project and client sites as required.
Preferred Assets

Professional Engineer (P.Eng./EIT) designation or eligibility preferred. Experience with high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) substations (115kV-500kV). Familiarity with network communication systems, fiber testing, or time synchronization (IRIG-B, PTP). Experience working on BESS, renewable, or transmission projects is an asset.
What We Offer

Competitive compensation and benefits package. Exposure to diverse, technically challenging substation projects. Opportunities for professional development and career growth. Supportive, collaborative work environment focused on quality and safety.
Travel Requirements

This position involves frequent travel to project sites across the United States. Typical assignments may range from short-duration factory tests to multi-week commissioning periods at utility or industrial substations. Candidates should be comfortable working in field environments, adhering to client safety and site protocols, and coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams on-site.
