JOB SUMMARY




As the Language School Student Support Counsellor, you will be providing prompt crisis assessment, intervention, and support through short-term counselling and connecting students with internal or external community resources, particularly during challenging times. The position demands a strong understanding of the newcomer settlement process and language learning challenges, in addition to empathy, good understanding of multiculturalism, strong communication skills, and a dedication to supporting and empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds.

CORE POSITION RESPONSIBILTIES



Student Support:



Provide crisis intervention for emergency situations Provide the appropriate additional support and services needed to ensure optimum care within the boundaries of confidentiality Provide individual short-term supportive counselling for newcomers Records information, incident reports and case notes for client files Assist clients in developing and implementing effective crisis management strategies Collaborate with settlement workers on initial needs assessments Liaise with community support and partners (i.e. mental health service providers and settlement workers) for client's recovery and integration into society, work with families, crisis intervention/prevention, referrals to other services, etc Make appropriate referrals to longer-term community support services and/or mental health services as required Conflict mediation for MAGMA students and clients enrolled in our on-site programs

Documentation and Reporting:



Maintain accurate and confidential client records and documentation Prepare reports and summaries as required by organizational policies and funders Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and confidentiality agreements Act as a liaison between all the departments to ensure seamless communication and coordination and keep up-to-date best practices and procedures

Collaboration and Teamwork:



Work closely with other MAGMA team members to ensure coordinated and holistic support for clients Deliver training to teachers as needed to improve student classroom experience Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities Collaborate with community organizations, service providers, and stakeholders to enhance client support

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS



Post-secondary degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, or a related health discipline (e.g., Counselling), or equivalent training Background in trauma-informed care or training Certification in Mental Health First Aid Current CPR/First Aid certification

ADDITIONAL SKILLS



Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving skills Proven ability to exercise discretion when handling sensitive and confidential matters Knowledge of community resources and mental health services in the Greater Moncton area, including trauma care providers specializing in family and partner violence Proficient in basic office and administrative tasks, including Microsoft Office and related software Skilled in planning, implementing, and evaluating group activities Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check is required Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders Awareness, understanding, and sensitivity to issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities Commitment to culturally responsive service delivery within an anti-racism framework
