Under the direction of the Director, CNC Research Forest, or designate, this is position will provide basic assistance to CNC research faculty and staff involved in Research Forest operations or various CNC applied research projects. The incumbent will be expected to apply the skills acquired during their post-secondary studies, training certifications, previous employee training, or new employee training to be delivered on-the-job at CNC.
Specific Duties
Digital data collection, primarily from research installations. Under the direction of experienced researchers, cleaning, sorting, correcting, stratifying, and analyzing research

information.

Install and maintain research equipment. Assemble research monitoring equipment within office and/or outdoor sites. Safely operation of any tools and equipment, related to assigned research project. Safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials (indoor lab), as required. Recognize and respond to safety hazard in worksites; and report safety incidents to supervisor and offer recommendations for improvements to worker health and safety. In collaboration with other Student Research Assistants and experienced Researchers, undertake various measurements and assessments of sample materials within applicable worksites. Assist Research staff with various assessments of research sites, where suitably trained. Under the guidance of experience Researchers, administer research surveys. Research available information related to assigned topics. Assist with literature reviews and market research, as assigned. Basic research equipment cleaning, maintenance and operation, as required. Assist supervisor in organizing field activities necessary to carry out daily research activities. Under guidance of supervisor, collect information to support the development research documents and data required in the supervision of various field projects, as assigned. Collect, store and assess project-related samples. Enter field data into spreadsheets and databases. Sort and complete quality checks on data. Contribute to safe and rewarding student learning and research activities associated with research labs, and outdoor research sites. Assist with preparation and delivery of demonstration tours within research labs, outdoor research sites for assigned research projects. You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities. You will promote a positive work atmosphere, communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect for students and colleagues. Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications
High School completion plus additional advanced courses Currently a student in good standing at a post-secondary institution. Preference to completed certified training or post-secondary studies related to the CNC research project Less than 6 months Volunteering or working in an industry related to the CNC research project


Ability to continuously contribute to a positive working team environment. Ability to maintain professional and constructive verbal and written communication. Class 5 or higher valid driver's license preferred. "N" status is acceptable (must provide a driver's abstract and license). Basic First Aid or willing to obtain. Able to efficiently use MS Outlook, Word and Excel. Familiarity with or willingness to train to use equipment, instruments, and tools related to an assigned CNC research project. Physical ability to complete the job demands.

Forest Research specific skills:



Ability to operate motorized vehicles such as an ATV or 4-wheel drive pick up on rough resource roads and trails or willingness to take training to do so. Able to identify vegetation (trees, shrubs, and herbs) to the species level. Able to use a map, compass, and GPS to navigate outdoors. Working knowledge and experience is required in safe work practices. Familiarity with the British Columbia Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification system.

Additional Appointment Details


Intended as unique work experience opportunities for current post-secondary students studying forestry and natural resources. Jobs are focused on forest and vegetation measurements and field data collection within CNC Research Forest and other forested sites near Prince George. The positions require daily travel from the CNC Prince George campus to various research sites across the Prince George Natural Resource District. The research projects often involve field data related to the ecological, wildlife, and plant/tree growth responses resulting from forest treatments. Assistants will also be involved data collection from multiple climate stations and be assisting with the examination and measurement of small planting trials involving deciduous and coniferous trees.



Employment beyond August 31, 2025 may be available to students not returning school in September, but is dependent on satisfactory job performance, ongoing workload, and budget considerations.
