Student Research Assistant Plant Growth Trial

Whitehorse, YT, Canada

Job Description

This opportunity is to work on a lab trial examining the effects of different soil mixes on the growth and health of dwarf tomato plants. We will use three different Yukon-sourced soil materials blended in differing quantities. Work will take place in the YRC lab. This student position is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working on an actual lab-based project.

Duties:

  • Participate in all phases of the lab work: creating soil mixes; seed germination; transplanting; washing, drying, and weighing plant materials at specific growth intervals; watering and tending plants on a weekly schedule; recording data; and recording observations of plant growth and health.
  • Depending on student availability and interests, the student may also participate in data analysis, literature review, and report writing.
Qualifications:
  • University student (any year) in science; preference for those with interest and coursework in biology, botany, environmental sciences, soils or similar.
  • Ability to record data and observations in an organized format.
  • Availability to tend plants on a regular weekly schedule as needed (i.e. water and record observations).
  • Experience in biology or chemistry labs and working with data is an asset.
  • Experience reviewing and summarizing literature and basic statistics is an asset but not required.
  • Experience with plants/gardening is an asset but not required.
The research assistant will work with the project coordinator on all aspects of the laboratory work and will independently tend the plants, dry samples, and record data. Student hours will not be consistent as some weeks will require several hours of lab time (transplanting, washing/drying/weighing plants), and other weeks will just require watering and monitoring the plants. The schedule will be somewhat flexible. The trial is anticipated to run from early October through to mid-January. Additional hours may be available Jan-March if the student participates in data analysis and reporting.
