Founded in 1912, the Faculty of Law is the oldest law school in Western Canada. Faculty members of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law are recognized nationally and internationally as leading scholars and teachers, and lead by example in their service to the university, legal and civic communities. The Faculty enrolls approximately 525 Juris Doctor students and operates a robust graduate program. The Faculty of Law is also home to four research groups that contribute research, ideas, innovation and policy expertise to important areas of public concern: the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge, Health Law Institute, Centre for Constitutional Studies, and Alberta Law Reform Institute.
Position
The Student Recruiter/Funding Advisor supports enrollment efforts of the Faculty of Law by providing admissions information to prospective students, creating communication materials, and representing the Faculty of Law at on-site locations such as high schools, universities, and community colleges.
This position establishes and administers programs for targeting recruitment and retention of students to academic programs in the Faculty of Law, including the Juris Doctor (JD) undergraduate program and graduate programs. The incumbent coordinates university participation in outreach activities, which include recruitment activities directed at historically marginalized and/or under-represented groups. The incumbent provides consultation to students regarding funding options available through the Faculty, University of Alberta, student loans, and private lending institutions. This position also takes the lead in organizing and planning information sessions, new student and family orientation events, and other programs for new and prospective law students. The incumbent is responsible for Law student exchange programs and provides information and assistance to University of Alberta students doing an exchange term abroad and foreign students completing an exchange term at the University of Alberta.
Duties
Student Recruitment

• Visits universities and colleges and speaks to groups and individual students regarding admission to the Faculty of Law, meets with school counselors and administrators to promote outreach activities, including visits to high schools, and develops relationships with schools and other areas being recruited from.
• Manages and coordinates workshops, retreats, and recruitment efforts for the Faculty of Law, including large, multi-departmental special student recruitment events and special events relating to the student recruitment of targeted or underrepresented groups, and arranges visits and tours for prospective students and parents.
• Serves as the point person for internal coordination of university student recruitment and enrollment management goals utilizing knowledge of admissions, registration criteria, and student funding and/or scholarship information and deadlines.
• Coordinates university participation of staff and alumni for national and local college recruitment fairs; coordinates event-specific organization, promotional materials, and information from university educational programs and degrees.
• Creates, resource materials for student recruitment and retention programs.
• Develops mentorship programs, analyzes trends in student recruitment and retention, and develops strategies for program evaluation.

Funding Advice

• Provides advice to potential students and families concerning admission requirements, student funding, and scholarships, alternative educational opportunities, and university policies and procedures.
• Prepares reports and proposals, and responds to inquiries from students and external agencies.
• Advises students during pre-admission, and identifies solutions to academic and/or financial problems, making appropriate on-campus referrals using knowledge of University programs and services (Student Funding, Success Services, Athletics and others).
• Liaises with external organizations to make off-campus referrals (government agencies, other post-secondary institutions, and others) as required.
• Maintains statistics and financial data regarding financial assistance and sources of funding.

Faculty Events

• Leads the planning and organization of information sessions, new student and family orientation events and other programs for new and prospective law students.
• Prepares material for events for new students and participates in events as a key source of information about the Faculty of Law and supports other student events as required.

Student Exchange Programs

• Provides information and advice to JD students on available exchange programs and information to foreign students on University of Alberta Law exchange programs.
• Assists University of Alberta students with arrangements for a term abroad and foreign students with a term at the University of Alberta under existing exchange agreements.
• Manages relationships with foreign universities that have exchange agreements with the Faculty of Law.
• Assists with the identification of international partners for new exchange programs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Post-secondary degree in Education, Marketing, Communication, Law, Education, or other related field.
• 1-2 years of experience working with students in a post-secondary environment.
• High level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple time commitments and deadlines.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's License and clean driver's abstract are required.
• Ability to travel for an extended period of time.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Understanding of and experience with student funding programs.
• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of the post-secondary environment, specifically the University of Alberta and the Faculty of Law is preferred.
• Previous recruitment experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of social networking platforms and University of Alberta campus policies is considered an asset.
• Experience recruiting for Law programs is considered an asset.
