Reporting to the Manager, Student Leadership Development and First Year Experience (SLD/FYE), the incumbent works closely with academic faculties, service units and campus partners to develop, deliver and coordinate the activities of the Student Leadership and Engagement department, at all three campuses. Using evidence-based, theoretically informed design principles the Student Leadership Development & Engagement Coordinator (SLD) contributes to building a vibrant campus community, facilitates student engagement with persistence and success throughout the student life cycle. The incumbent coordinates programs of the department such as Peer Mentoring, Student Leadership Development, Volunteerism, and other engagement activities. This includes project management and creating program and event timelines and workflow; communication with internal and external partners; data collection, analysis and program evaluation. The SLD Coordinator brings to this role a strong understanding of student leadership development theory; curriculum and program design; proven ability to create high impact programs that meet the needs of a diverse student population and promote a sense of belonging; strong understanding of factors which drive student engagement, persistence and success.

What You\'ll be Doing

  • Developing and delivering curriculum and programs to assist students in attaining their educational goals by providing opportunities for leadership development, including conferences, workshops, events, etc.;
  • Developing effective online (SLATE) leadership development training curriculum and modules for student leaders;
  • Coordinating in-person and virtual training for student leaders;
  • Creating, developing and maintaining updated information via the Student Leadership Development and Engagement virtual community on SLATE, and providing technical assistance to students and staff supervisors/managers;
  • Coordinating volunteering activities with other Sheridan departments and Student Union on a monthly basis;
  • Creating opportunities to get involved on campus with other internal and external community partners;
  • Overseeing the daily operations of the Peer Mentor Program at all campuses;
  • Developing the recruitment processes for over 600 peer mentoring applications annually;
  • Screening applicants by accessing, interpreting and assessing grade requirements and expressions of interest;
  • Producing hiring guidelines, interview guides and scheduling interviews for the Peer Mentor Program and coordinating/participating in the hiring panel for 130+ peer mentor positions on an annual basis;
  • Selecting and overseeing the day-to-day activities of 100+ Peers annually;
  • Guiding and advising Student Leadership Peer Mentors (100+ students); Outlining and guiding activities including 1 to 1 and group mentoring, weekly outreach and awareness campaigns and communication and outreach strategies;
  • Providing support to Student Leadership Offices by: providing information regarding Student Leadership programs and events and promoting program offerings; maintaining websites for all Student Leadership areas and updating information as required; developing and maintaining promotional materials, both electronic and print, etc.;
  • Collecting data and identifying trends related to volunteering and mentoring activities on campus; making recommendations for improvement and identifying areas for development based on trends;
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned.

Your solid understanding of theories of instructional design and delivery coupled with your exceptional presentation skills, will allow you to deliver expert level presentations and training to large groups using a variety of methods, including virtually.

You enjoy project management, balancing many different tasks, staying organized and planning and have an ability to integrate multiple streams of information and prioritize to meet a demanding workload.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:
  • 4-year degree in Business, Education, Social Science, or a related field
  • 3 years of experience working with leadership, engagement and student mentoring programs (equivalency to be considered);
  • Experience organizing, coordinating and developing grassroots programs in a post-secondary environment
  • Experience recruiting, training and overseeing large student groups
  • Experience designing and delivering expert level presentations and training to large groups using a variety of methods, including virtually
  • Extensive knowledge of Student Development Theory, Involvement Theory and Leadership theory
