Position Summary
The Student Employment Advisor provides ongoing support to a highly diverse and international student and alumni population in all areas of job search and development, from the pre-employment phase through to job offer stage. The successful incumbent acts as the primary contact for students, graduates and alumni for one-on-one advice regarding job search strategies including: resume/cover letter writing, job readiness, self-marketing, interview techniques, and overcoming employment barriers. The Advisor will develop and deliver engaging workshops while creating materials to ensure readiness for the employment market. In addition, the Advisor will organize and coordinate career fairs and other special events in collaboration with internal stakeholders to establish links between employers, students, professional bodies and other community services to contribute to the overall successful employment of students within their chosen fields.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students individually and through workshop instruction to ease the transition from college to the workplace
  • Advise students on effective resumes, cover letters, mock interviews and job search strategies
  • Act as the primary contact for individuals seeking to develop employability skills for full-time, part-time and summer employment
  • Assess the individual’s situation, goals and employment objectives and develop a specialized action plan
  • Work with students of all levels, that is, students with an advanced understanding of their skills and abilities, and those with no experience or knowledge of employment skills
  • Develop and deliver job search workshops for all program areas of the College on effective resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, job search strategies, maximizing Career Fairs/Job Fairs, effective networking and workplace etiquette
  • Provide appropriate materials to workshop participants to ensure readiness for the employment market
  • Research the program outcomes and objectives as outlined in the program calendars to ensure the accuracy of technical that are incorporated in job search materials
  • Plan and facilitate career and job search events, involving a diverse group of industry partners and employers
  • Maintain accurate documentation and statistical reports
  • Deliver Employment Pre-placement courses to Co-op students as requested
  • Submit grades on the student management database system (CRM) for the Employment Pre-placement course in accordance with academic deadlines
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications/Experience
  • Three (3) year degree and/or diploma or equivalent in one of the following fields of study: Business or Communications Studies (e.g. Marketing, Communications Studies, Human Resources), Social Science or related field (e.g. Psychology, Sociology)
  • Minimum three (3) years progressive advising experience in an employment services and/or career services work environment
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Labour Market, Centennial College programs, employment trends and marketing techniques
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and CRM systems or related databases
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and developing presentations
  • Workshop facilitation experience, including an understanding of adult learning principles
  • Advanced problem solving, assessment and evaluation skills
  • Knowledgeable about most current job search strategies and trends
  • Experience organizing and coordinating career fairs or other special events in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Proven experience providing one-on-one advising on career planning and job search techniques
  • Strong understanding of the needs and experience working with international students or internationally trained, and the resources to access employment
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of working effectively in a diverse environment
