The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the Integrated Communications Team. As part of the Strategy, Communications, and Government Relations Group, this team ensures that communications are aligned, complex information is simplified, priorities are clear, and policies and impacts are well understood. The team advises on and delivers internal and external communications, responds to media and other inquiries, provides design and editorial services, and maintains and enhances digital platforms. Our work ensures that every initiative has purpose, every message is clear, and every change is communicated with care.

As a Student, Communications, you will support the team's strategic and functional work, gaining mentorship from experienced communicators and participating in all aspects of corporate communications. You will build practical skills through hands-on experience, collaborate with professionals across the AER, and develop a strong professional network to support your future career. This role is ideal for someone who loves storytelling, creative problem-solving, and seeing how communications influence real-world decisions. We are seeking a passionate communicator with strong writing, critical thinking, and relationship-building skills, eager to learn, contribute, and help ensure the safe, responsible, and efficient development of Alberta's mineral and energy resources.

What your day-to-day will look like:Evaluate, design, and implement communication plans to support a variety of initiatives. Research and create content for internal and external audiences, including articles, key messages, and briefing notes. Collaborate with team members to develop supporting communication materials, such as social media content, intranet posts, print materials, and web copy. Work with business areas and subject-matter experts to develop and implement effective communication plans. Assist with event planning, including town halls and other stakeholder engagement activities. Compile and analyze data to inform and optimize communication strategies.

What we're looking for in you:Currently enrolled in second year or higher of a Bachelor's program in Public Relations or Communications, or a related field. Exceptional writing and storytelling skills with strong attention to detail. Strong research and analytical abilities. Ability to manage competing priorities. Self-driven and capable of working independently while actively contributing to team objectives and timelines.

Additional Information:Proof of enrollment in a registered institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
