Student Assistant, Writing Tutor, University LibraryIn the appointment of Student Assistant - Writing Tutor, your general duties and responsibilities will be the following:

  • email tutoring as needed for USask students in tutor area(s) of expertise
  • drop-in and appointment-based writing tutoring shift(s) for USask students at all levels of study, across the disciplines
  • workshop preparation and facilitation
  • resource material preparation and/or proofreading
  • USask Undergraduate Research Journal support activities (e.g., pre-review assessment of article submissions).
Your general location of work will be in the University Library with some duties eligible to be done remotely, and you will report to Liv Marken, University Library.Required Number of Hours: Hours of work vary according to time of year, incoming work volume, and tutor availability. Maximum 12 hours a week. There is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours per week.Duration of Employment: Sept. 1, 2024 - April 30, 2025, with no hours between December 9 - Jan 6, and April 7-30.Qualifications (Skills and Abilities) A minimum of three years of full-time university study in any discipline, with an average of 85% or higher in writing-intensive courses (\xe2\x80\x9cwriting-intensive course\xe2\x80\x9d means that writing is comprehensively integrated into the course, and written assessments form a significant part of the coursework). Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, time management, and organizational skills.Must be registered as a USask student for Fall and Winter Terms 2023-2024.Training, education, credentials, qualifications, etc. and corresponding experience in any of the following areas is an asset, but not required:
  • Writing centre or university student academic support unit peer mentoring or tutoring;
  • Mental Health First Aid training; thorough knowledge of campus student and academic support services;
  • excellent knowledge of multiple citation styles, particularly APA, MLA, CMOS (notes-bib / Turabian, and author-date) or Vancouver; education in composition theory and practice;
  • experience with academic publishing (as author or editor);
  • personal experience with successful undergraduate or graduate thesis completion;
  • courses including argumentation, grammar, mechanics, punctuation, editing, proofreading (e.g., 85%+ in upper-level English, TESL, INTS 103, LING 110, LING 111, or ENVS 90);
  • university-level teaching - as TA or instructor; professional editor - e.g. Editors\' Canada professional certification;
  • formal education in instructional design or education; certified EAL/ESL-English as an additional language (EAL) and/or English for academic purposes (EAP); multilingual (i.e., language learner);
  • equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) - e.g., cultural competencies, unconscious bias, inclusive practices;
  • Indigenous cultural contexts and histories;
  • decolonization and anti-racist pedagogy; 2SLGBTQIA+ allyship, inclusion training, experience;
  • training in supporting learners with visible or invisible disabilities (or lived experience - type of disability does not need to be disclosed);
  • training, experience in supporting neurologically diverse students; assistive technologies (e.g., Read&Write software), particularly those involved in reading and writing;
  • training in ethical and practical use of generative artificial intelligence; science and technical writing.
