Your opportunity:

Downtown Legal Services (DLS), is both a community legal clinic and a clinical education program, operated by the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. Our services are provided by law students, who work under the close supervision of our expert staff lawyers. Approximately 140 law students work at the clinic every year, enabling us to serve over two thousand low-income people in the areas of housing, employment family, criminal, refugee and immigration law.

Reporting to the Director, DLS, the Student and Administrative Services Coordinator - Downtown Legal Services acts as the first point of contact for DLS enquiries, providing information and resolving issues for law students, clients and the public. The incumbent provides support to the Supervising Lawyers to assist in delivering high quality legal aid services to a vulnerable client population with sensitivity.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
  • Booking rooms and arranging appropriate accommodations
  • Liaising with contacts to ensure consistent administration procedures are followed
  • Writing routine documents and correspondence
  • Verifying the accuracy and completeness of documents
  • Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming

Essential Qualifications:

  • College Diploma (2 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years directly related experience in legal services.
  • Experience providing administrative support in a legal aid clinic and/or legal aid environment.
  • Directly related experience implementing the Law Society of Ontario\'s file Management Guidelines
  • Solid experience preparing legal documents for hearings and tribunals including formatting documents according to legal standards, policies and procedures
  • Experience preparing documents for notarizing and commissioning services including affidavits and statutory declarations.
  • Strong familiarity with the administration of courts and tribunals in the areas of criminal, employment, family, refugee and/or immigration law.
  • Excellent understanding of legal and non-legal services available to low income Toronto residents; demonstrated experience providing high quality referrals
  • Excellent computer proficiency including Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook) and CLIO
  • Excellent communication sklls, written and verbal
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to effectivelymanage competing deadlines and priorities
