Position Overview

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Stroke Scientific Communications Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Director.

The Scientific Communications Coordinator is responsible for communicating insights from stroke research in a manner that is valuable and easily understandable by the public, funders, and patients as part of knowledge translation efforts, generating multi-media content as necessary for this purpose. Handle stakeholder engagement research and discussions with patients/families, members of the public, healthcare providers, and researchers as needed for different projects through surveys, interviews, and focus groups.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Manage knowledge translation efforts of the group to support stroke research and engagement

Generate multi-media content as necessary for this purpose

Support Academic-Industry partnership in support of disseminating and promoting stroke research and funding

Handle stakeholder engagement research and discussions with patients/families, members of the public, healthcare providers, and researchers as needed for different projects through surveys, interviews, and focus groups

Lead and drive social media campaigns and associated platforms/modalities

Strategically plan editorial and photo lineups and consistently monitors current campus and off-campus news to identify story ideas

Work and co-ordinate with other communicators, students, faculty and researchers across the stroke research sphere to help shape and edit stories, and ensure efficiency, timeliness and overall high quality

Oversees layout, appearance and content; strategically plans, creates and maintains editorial calendar

Edits articles, some of which may be rejected or returned to the writer for revision; ensures appropriate reviews and approvals

Assigns photography requirements and selects images to be used

Writes compelling headlines and captions

Generates story ideas and co-ordinates requests for article submissions

Monitors statistics and establishes and implements process for reporting and analysis

Responds to inquiries and story pitches

Attends weekly editorial meetings with communications and media relations team

Works with website team to identify ways to incorporate other technology/social media into

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in biology, life/health sciences, or nursing
  • Experience in communicating scientific or medical concepts to the general public
  • Specific training in scientific communication (SciComm) or Master in Biomedical Technology (MBT) or equivalent will be highly valued
  • Experience in mixed-methods research will be highly valued
  • 2-5 years of related experience, ideally in complex organizations or technology startups would be an asset
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment is an asset
  • Excellent writing, editing and project management skills
  • Superior grammar and spelling skills and solid knowledge of Canadian Press Style Guide
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work efficiently under deadline pressure
  • Attention to detail and quality control
  • Leadership skills and the ability to be diplomatic and fair
