Job Description

Adams Lake Indian Band is seeking one fulltime Stewardship Forester. Reporting to, and under the direction of the Senior Stewardship Officer, the FN Woodlands Manager is responsible for managing the forestry aspects of the Adams Lake Indian Band's forest management activities.


The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and directing ALIB team members and outside field crews to meet objectives while establishing and maintaining a safety program that ensures compliance with WorkSafe BC requirements. Working closely with the Natural Resources Department team, you will provide quality control measures and ensure adherence to government regulations and ALIB land management objectives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE



Develops, implements and administers a safety program to ensure compliance to WorkSafe B.C requirements Manages existing forest licenses, including meeting cut control requirements, and reporting on the licenses. Develops timber harvesting opportunities on active licenses totaling approximately 50,000m3 annually, including: + Timber reconnoiters
+ Block and road layout
+ Required assessments
+ Completion of site plans
+ Appraisal and ECAS submission
+ Cutting permit approval and
+ Post-harvest PHARM reporting
Supervises harvesting of approved cutting permits when required Conducts silviculture activity on approximately 2300 hectares of harvested lands, including: + Supervising site preparation
+ Seedling ordering in SPAR
+ Contracting the growing and storage of the seedlings
+ Contracting and supervising the seedling planting
+ Completing or supervising field surveys
+ Supervising in-house brushing crews
+ Submitting Regeneration and Free Growing milestone declarations in RESULTS
+ Managing the Phoenix database and reporting to government
+ Updating forward plans, estimating costs and producing and annual accrual of long-term silviculture liability
+ Supervising the native berry program
Supervises the Caribou Road Deactivation program Works with the Natural Resources Department team including GIS, Project Accountant, and other staff Communicates with other Bands government, funding agencies and customers Ensures accurate and timely invoicing information Work with the Title and Rights department as needed for forest based consultations and the new Forest Landscape Plan process being implemented Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILILITIES



Registered Professional Forester certification in good standing Post secondary education in Forestry or Natural Resources Minimum of 5 years comparable experience Knowledge of ecosystem function, soils, riparian assessments, forest health, wildlife, forest ecology, and silviculture Experience in a First Nations environment, including experience with funding agencies, culture, title & rights and traditions would be considered an asset Strong computer skills, including the Phoenix database and Ministry of Forests key applications Good verbal and written communication skills Excellent analytical and organizational skills to achieve desired results Diplomatic and confidential with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES




Supervise others as required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS




Work can be strenuous as it includes walking and carrying equipment. Must be able to work on foot in different or changing environments for extended periods of time. Work in physically demanding terrain using compass and GPS and able to take field notes.

WORKING CONDITIONS




Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment. Must be able to safely work around and with heavy machinery. Occasionally exposed to insects, fumes and varying weather conditions, which may be extreme from hot and cold or wet, but still able to perform assigned tasks.

EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE




Microsoft Office Suite - Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Compass, GPS, PPE (Personal protective equipment) Hi-vis vest, hard hat, steel toed boots, screens and tripod, shovel, trowel, radios/SPOT (satellite personal tracker), Apple iPad and camera.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS




Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License (copy required)


Level 1 First Aid Certificate

BONA FIDE JOB REQUIREMENTS




Current Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector clearance with results acceptable to ALIB

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT




Full time permanent position


Wage per hour: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience


Upon completion of probation ALIB offers comprehensive Benefits and a Pension Plan.


Hours per week: 75 hours biweekly (max 37.5 hrs./week), with flexibility in hours/days of work.
