Summary
The Steel Structure Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel projects. This role involves reviewing drawings and specifications, performing quantity take-offs, pricing materials and labor, coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors, and supporting the project team during bidding and execution phases.
Key Responsibilities
Review architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and bid documents
Perform detailed quantity take-offs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and connections
Prepare material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates
Request and analyze quotes from suppliers, fabricators, and subcontractors
Develop complete bid proposals, including clarifications and exclusions
Assess project risks and identify cost-saving opportunities
Coordinate with engineering, project management, and fabrication teams
Participate in bid reviews and handover meetings after award
Maintain estimating databases, pricing records, and historical cost data
Assist with value engineering and alternative design proposals when required
Qualifications & Experience
Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
More than 2 years of experience in structural steel or miscellaneous metals estimating
Strong understanding of steel fabrication, erection, and connection design concepts
Ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings
Knowledge of Canadian or applicable steel codes and standards (e.g., CSA, AISC) is an asset
Technical Skills
Proficiency in estimating and take-off software (e.g., Tekla, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Advance Steel, or similar)
Strong Excel and cost-analysis skills
Familiarity with steel weights, profiles, coatings, and fabrication processes
Understanding of shop and site labor productivity
Soft Skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent time management and ability to meet tight deadlines
Clear communication and teamwork skills
Analytical mindset with problem-solving ability

Works closely with project managers, engineers, and production teams
