Staff Sergeant

Primary Purpose: To lead four platoons and a team of dispatchers, ensuring all members have the skills and resources required to complete and perform their duties. You will ensure quality control and proper operation of each platoon and dispatch operation while working closely with members to ensure compliance is achieved in relation to university and protective services directives and standards.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will ensure a safe environment on campus and directly supervise a team of up to 20 Peace Officers and four Dispatchers. The work requires a high level of attention to detail in a busy environment with frequent and emergent interruptions. You will provide oversight to patrol operations, as well as coach and guide patrol members towards their own success.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensure effective and efficient procedures for reporting, audit trail, and controls are maintained.
  • Provides supervision to Peace Officers and Dispatch personnel and manages the entire employee life cycle through activities such as recruitment, orientation and onboarding, retention and separations, coaching and performance feedback, supporting professional growth, training and development, managing performance improvement, and addressing disciplinary matters up to and including termination.
  • Provide proofs and diary dates and ensures compliance with directives and standards.
  • Treat sensitive information and materials as confidential.
  • Communicate issues of importance or concern to the Operations Manager in a timely manner.
  • Ensure members receive daily shift briefings.
  • Oversee dispatcher functions and ensure activities are performed accurately.
  • Monitor and approve time-in-lieu and vacation for all members.
  • Based on established protocols, ensure appropriate staffing levels for special events and ensure operations orders for each event are completed.
  • Operate as the departmental quartermaster.
  • Understand and apply the CUPE 1975 Collective Agreement through shift scheduling (I.e., sick time, vacation, minimum staffing levels).
  • Maintain training files (including training modules and Records of Conversation).
  • Maintain property and evidence and ensure proper procedures are adhered to.
  • Ensure oversight of peace officer deployment during special events.
  • Monitor security contract activities; ensure contractual obligations are met.
  • Liaise with external agencies, ensuring relationships are maintained.
  • May be required to perform duties of Incident Commander, Operations Manager at times.
Education and Experience: Post-secondary degree or a post-secondary certificate in a related field (policing, sociology, psychology) and a combination of education and experience (police, law enforcement, securities). Previous managerial experience is required.

Skills: Must be of good character (Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector Check with fingerprints). Must prove efficacy in providing direction and guidance to a large group of disparate individuals; the ability to work within the restraints of a budget while maintaining efficient operations; efficient and effective interpersonal and communication skills, critical thinking, sound judgement and decision making; strong leadership qualities including the ability to influence others to share and commit to a common vision, foster positive work and learning environments, and make timely decisions even when unpopular or difficult.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $64,107.00 - 100,169.00 per annum. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
