What you'll do
The Transmission Lines Engineering Division is growing! We provide complete engineering for new and existing lines for
voltages 60kV to 500kV, including overhead lines, underground cable lines, and submarine cables. Select teams provide
telecommunication fibre optic wire and antenna supporting tower designs. We also support the management of compatible
use of the Transmission Rights-of-Way.
The teams are set up to focus on the following assets and discipline areas: Cable design, Civil design, Electrical design,
Geotechnical design, Overhead Line design, and Structural design. We provide engineering expertise to Project and
Program Delivery groups, Asset Planning, and Field Operations in the delivery of Capital, Interconnections, Electrification,
Maintenance, and Emergency Response work.
We currently have a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer in the Transmission Lines
Division. The Structural Engineer is required to work within a multi-discipline team to design efficient and reliable electrical
transmission line supporting structures, as well as telecommunication antenna supporting structures. In addition to providing
engineering and design services for BC Hydro as the Professional of Record, the Structural Engineer will also assume the
role of Owner's Engineer for design activities completed by external engineering partners.
Analyzes and resolves a variety of challenging and unusual structural engineering problems of high complexity with
independent judgement and high collaboration for new and existing transmission line supporting structures and
telecommunication antenna supporting structures.
Manages large engineering design work packages within multi-discipline project teams, including planning, resources and
coordinating work to ensure commitments are met.
Develops creative and innovative engineering techniques, makes recommendations for strategic business decisions, and
seeks to influence with proposed business solutions for new and existing transmission line supporting structures and
telecommunication antenna supporting structures.
Completes accurate, reliable and cost-effective designs for overhead transmission line supporting structures and
telecommunication antenna supporting structures that will meet BC Hydro standards and specifications, safety by design
practices, as well as constructability requirements. This includes modeling, analysis and design of structures as well as
preparation of all required design deliverables.
Acts as Professional of Record (POR) for various transmission projects.
Prepares technical and project specifications, technical input for cost estimates, and request for proposal (RFP)
documents for material supply and structure installation.
Implements BC Hydro Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) Design Practices in all work assignments, including
Safety by Design Procedure, Check and Review Practice and Field Review Practice.
Resolves site queries, attends site meetings and performs field reviews during the construction phase of projects.
Maintains complete project documentation with respect to structural design and construction, including design basis,
design plan, calculations, drawings, reports, safety by design process documents, checking and reviewing records,
independent structural review records, field review records, design completion reports, record drawings, and other related
information.
Acts as Independent Checker or Independent Structural Reviewer for work of internal team to ensure completeness,
accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to input requirements and engineering standards.
As Owner's Engineer, acts as Reviewer for external consultants' and contractors' designs to ensure compliance to
contractual scope and deliverable requirements, BC Hydro engineering standards, sound design practices and
constructability criteria.
Initiates and maintains strongly influential professional relationships with internal and external colleagues. Collaborates
with project and design teams, as well as with other business groups within the organization. Identifies impact of work on
others and resolves issues proactively.
Provides strong technical leadership internally and externally for specialized skills in transmission line or
telecommunication structural design.
Performs regular and significant mentoring, coaching and engages in proactive self-development.
What you bring
Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities and EGBC.
Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC
(EGBC).
Minimum of 8 years of proven working experience and demonstrated performance in structural engineering field relevant
to overhead electrical transmission lines at voltage up to 500 kV and telecommunication antenna supporting structures.
Excellent technical knowledge in structural engineering design of steel, wood and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP)
transmission line supporting structures and steel telecommunication antenna supporting structures.
Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, many of which are medium to high complexity
and unusual in nature.
Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in oral and written formats on technical matters, both to technical and
nontechnical audiences.
Ability to work and technically lead in multi-discipline engineering environment is essential.
Ability to manage client relationships and work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that
add value and to reach consensus is required.
Capability to coordinate multiple engineering design projects and to plan and manage project resources is required.
Knowledge of applicable Canadian codes and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and CSA
standards, as well as North American transmission structure design standards is required.
Working experience with structural finite element analysis and design software is required.
Working knowledge of PLS-Tower and PLS-Pole design software is preferred. Familiarity with PLS-CADD transmission
line design software is desirable.
Excellent leadership, communication, technical writing, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills are required.
Proactive approach in ongoing professional and personal development activities such as self-study, attendance at
technical and administrative courses, and participation in technical and professional societies is required.

Must have a valid Driver's License Type = Class 5

This position is hybrid flexible work role and the home office location is Edmonds office in Burnaby. The applicant must be
able to report to the office within a reasonable time frame when called upon for work. Currently, the expectation is a
minimum of 2 days per week in the office and may be more depending on business need
