The Senior SMT Manufacturing Technician is the primary technical authority responsible for the setup, operation, performance, and reliability of all SMT production equipment. This role ensures consistent, high-quality PCB assembly in compliance with IPC-A-610 Class 3 standards while maintaining flexibility in a low-to-medium volume, high-mix environment.
This individual serves as the day-to-day production lead, working hands-on with equipment, mentoring team members, and supporting engineering and quality initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform complete SMT line setup and verification, including:
Solder paste printer setup, basic troubleshooting and programming
SPI system operation and inspection result interpretation
Pick-and-place machine setup, feeder configuration, component verification and operation
Reflow oven profiling and process monitoring
AOI system operation and defect review
Conveyor setup and material flow optimization
Execute product changeovers efficiently while minimizing downtime
Ensure compliance with IPC-A-610 Class 3 workmanship standards
Identify process deviations and implement corrective actions
Work with programming and quality teams to reduce defects and rework
Monitor process stability and yield performance
Support audits, customer requirements, and traceability needs
Perform routine preventative maintenance and calibration
Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and process-related equipment issues
Escalate advanced technical issues appropriately while supporting resolution
Maintain equipment logs and service records
Train and mentor SMT technicians and programmers
Promote cross-training to ensure production continuity
Serve as technical backup for programming and rework activities
Foster a collaborative and accountable team environment
Qualifications & Skills
5+ years of SMT manufacturing experience
Strong knowledge of SMT equipment and production workflows
Experience in IPC-A-610 Class 3 manufacturing environments
Basic understanding of SMT programming (placement, SPI, AOI)
Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Ability to multitask and adapt in a low- to medium-volume environment
Strong team-oriented mindset
Preferred Certifications
IPC-A-610 Certification (Class 3)
IPC Hand Soldering (J-STD-001) - an asset
Working Conditions
Hybrid work arrangement with regular on-site presence in Aurora, Ontario.
Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, multi-project environment.
Requires extended periods of computer-based work and lab testing.
Must be eligible under CGP and ITAR requirements (Canadian/US citizen or Canadian Permanent Resident with clear background check)
