Overview

WorkSafeBC is committed to Indigenous reconciliation and is developing and launching an Indigenous Relations Strategy. We are looking to hire a Sr. Manager, Indigenous Relations, who will lead this new team and the organization through the strategy\xe2\x80\x99s implementation, guiding the various activities, advising senior leadership, and establishing and maintaining relationships with Indigenous communities, employers, and organizations.

This role may be for you if you have lived experience and knowledge of Indigenous cultures and issues combined with experience in social planning, relationship management, research and evaluation, policy development, and the formulation and implementation of major strategies.

In this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll manage WorkSafeBC\xe2\x80\x99s overall approach in implementing our evolving strategic direction around reconciliation efforts and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP), including obligations outlined in the Province of B.C.\xe2\x80\x99s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (BCDRIPA). You\xe2\x80\x99ll work collaboratively with divisional business units and act as an enterprise resource in implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s calls to action relevant to government agencies.

Where you\xe2\x80\x99ll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll work primarily from your B.C. home and occasionally in our Richmond office. You may also occasionally travel throughout the province.

What you\'ll do

  • Manage the operations of the Indigenous Relations team to ensure effective delivery of services
  • Establish and foster relationships between Indigenous communities, employers, and organizations and WorkSafeBC
  • Work with the senior leaders and Indigenous communities to coordinate meetings between with Indigenous communities, employers, and organizations to identify opportunities for the meaningful implementation of the Indigenous Relations Strategy, including WorkSafeBC reconciliation efforts
  • Identify opportunities and develop plans and programs to implement UNDRIP, BCDRIPA, and Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada calls to action
  • Advise senior leadership on local, regional, national, and global issues and policies that could impact WorkSafeBC, or where there are other opportunities for WorkSafeBC to leverage its expertise and/or achievements
  • Support WorkSafeBC staff\xe2\x80\x99s participation on committees, in working groups, at conferences and other forums to represent WorkSafeBC in addressing reconciliation priorities

  • Maintain current knowledge in the field of Indigenous relations
  • Build and foster strong relationships and leverage opportunities for more effective collaboration with Indigenous communities, employers and organizations
  • Manage and direct assigned staff in maintaining high levels of service while creating a supportive and healthy work environment
  • Work collaboratively with departments across WorkSafeBC to develop and implement corporate-wide reconciliation initiatives
  • Conduct research and prepare detailed written reports and documentation
  • Promote a service-oriented approach
Your background and experience
  • A degree in Indigenous studies, public administration, public policy, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in social planning, relationship management, research and evaluation, policy development, and the formulation and implementation of major strategies
  • A deep understanding of Indigenous issues and an appreciation of the complexity and range of Indigenous peoples and communities in British Columbia
  • The preferred candidate will have lived experience within Indigenous communities
