Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Public Affairs, and an integral member of the Corporate Operations & Strategy Division\xe2\x80\x99s senior leadership team, the Senior Director, Media Relations & External Communications is responsible for leading all media relations and communications activities and initiatives to help HOOPP build, promote and enhance a strong reputation, shape public opinion and increase awareness of HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s brand in Canada and globally. This individual has a strong degree of autonomy and seen as a trusted senior advisor to senior leaders and C-suite executives, acting as HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s Canadian and global spokesperson.

The Senior Director, Media and External Communications is responsible for externally positioning and strengthening HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s brand and reputation as a well-managed and well-respected pension plan, a trusted thought leader in pension advocacy and a top employer focused on equity, diversity and inclusion. They will have a strong track record of being a persuasive and dynamic leader with highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, who is outgoing and comfortable with networking, influencing and persuading at the highest level.

What you will do:

Develop, plan, execute and influence

  • HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s overall media strategy (including traditional, digital and social media), supporting multiple areas of focus including HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s member engagement, Fund performances, Climate Change Strategy, employer- of - choice positioning, pension advocacy and thought leadership in the Canadian and global pension landscape. Cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers

  • Act as HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s principal media advisor and global corporate spokesperson,

  • Develop media releases, opinion pieces, pitches and reponses that effectively convey HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s corporate narrative and positioning, to educate and inform media and, by extension, HOOPP members and other external stakeholders about HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s brand and value, in Canada and globally

  • Exercise judgement to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare key messages and other supporting material as needed

  • Deliver media training and provide message coaching as required to HOOPP spokespeople, including the President and CEO, the Executive Team and senior leaders across the organization.

  • Develop key messages, statements, Q\xe2\x80\x99s & A\xe2\x80\x99s and speaking remarks, as required, to ensure HOOPP spokespeople are properly prepared for media interviews or events

  • Oversee all domestic and global media inquiries and interview requests on behalf of HOOPP

  • Plan and oversee the execution of media conferences, events, tours and executive photo shoots as required

  • Provides executive level and C-suite advice and support for external speaking opportunities with an emphasis on high-profile engagements and help them maximize the impact and alignment of key messaging across all HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s audiences externally and internally

  • Provide high level briefings on HOOPP initiatives to media (Annual Reports, Fund performances, program launches, strategies etc.)

  • Ensure significant media announcements coverage and analysis are shared with key internal stakeholders, including the Executive Team and Board of Trustees, when appropriate

  • Oversee ongoing media monitoring and reporting and analyze media metrics to measure the effectiveness of media relaltions and external communications activities. Recommend and implement cross-channel approaches to communication based on the organization\xe2\x80\x99s priorities, emerging opportunities and insights gained from data analysis

  • Proactively monitor and report media coverage on priority issues outlined in HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s Strategic Plan and annual business plans (e.g sustainable investing, healthcare transformation etc.) and develop mitigation strategies

  • Ensure the continued evaluation and implementation of media monitoring tools and resources to effectively meet HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s media relations\xe2\x80\x99 needs and manages vendors in this area as required.

  • As a senior leader, develop and maintain trusted relations with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including senior executives, C-suite, divisional peers as well as media, Settlors, peer plans and other stakeholders relevant to HOOPP\xe2\x80\x99s media strategy


What you bring:

  • Undergraduate or post-graduate degree in Journalism, Public Relations or Communication or equivalent education, training and experience.

  • Minimum 15 years proven experience in public relations, reputation management, media relations and or corporate communications.

  • Proven experience in working with senior executives, demonstrating advanced influencing and negotiation skills.

  • Experience in producing diverse publications and other communication deliverables (print, web, digital) with simultaneious or overlapping deadlines, in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience working in a highly complex organization with multi-stakeholders.

  • Prior pension and/or financial industry knowledge and understanding of the Ontario healthcare landscape are assets.

  • Strong media relations background with an expansive list of domestic and international contacts in print, radio, television, online media and bloggers with a strong track record of delivering media coverage and placement results in all media spaces

  • Skilled writer and editor, with significant experience in writing, proofing and editing material and presenting proposals and plans to senior leaders and Board members.

  • Critical thinking and excellent analytical skills to enable immediate and appropriate assessment of complex issues of concern to the CEO/ExT and Board Members

  • Proven leader of media relations team responsible for the planning and execution of a comprehensive media strategy

  • Strong track record of being a persuasive and dynamic leader with highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, who is outgoing and comfortable with networking, influencing and persuading at the highest level.

  • Adept at analyzing and reporting on media coverage

  • Deep understanding of how media relations and content creation influences and informs key stakeholders

  • Extensive experience in issues and reputation management, mitigating risk, both proactively and reactively

  • Proven experience developing and advising on comprehensive brand and reputation plans, reputational risk assessments, corporate positioning and messaging and executing tactics that communicates, promotes and protects a brand, person or product

  • Deep understanding of the value of media relations and corporate communicatons and the role of multichannel storytelling

  • Proven experience developing and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to manage numerous conflicting priorities, and to consistently meet deadlines under pressure.

  • A team player who will build and maintain a positive work environment and manage themselves effectively through times of change.

  • Strategic and critical thinker with the ability to experess ideas in a clear well-organized manner
