Position Overview:
Sprinkler fitter apprentices support the certified Sprinkler Fitters in the installation and modification of water-based fire suppression systems in buildings. As a regulated construction trade in Nova Scotia, there is always a Red Seal Certified Sprinkler Fitter present to provide hands-on training and guidance while working. The ratio in Nova Scotia for apprentices to sprinkler fitters is currently 3:1, but most often we maintain a 2:1 or 1:1 ratio to provide the best learning experience.
Our projects are predominantly new multi-unit residential buildings throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) area. We work with CPVC and black iron piping and fittings. All apprentices are provided with on-the-job training and safety training as required and are expected to attend 3 levels of sprinkler fitter apprentice training locally to obtain their Red Seal Sprinkler Fitter certification in approximately 4 years.
Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice duties include, but are not limited to:
Support the safe execution of work
Read and interpret drawings, specifications and fire codes to determine layout requirements
Install clamps, brackets and hangers to support piping system and sprinkler and fire protection equipment, using hand and power tools
Select, measure, cut, ream and thread pipe, install sprinkler heads and mount prepared pipe in supports
Join and connect pipes and piping sections to related piping systems, sprinkler mains, pumps, compressors and control equipment using various pipe joining methods
Connect piping system to water mains, fire pumps, compressors and control equipment
Installs valves, switches and associated equipment (no electrical)
Test system for leaks using air or water pressure equipment
Inspect, maintain and repair piping, fixtures and controls related to sprinkler systems
Service and repair sprinkler system
Read and interpret work specifications and fire codes (ie., NFPA 13)
Qualifications:
Ability to speak, read, and understand English
High school diploma or equivalent
Relevant experience of sprinkler system installation considered and asset
Experience with all water suppression systems and fire pump equipment considered an asset
Valid driver's license (an asset)

Pay will be between $20 - $25/hour, dependent on qualifications and experience.
