Job Title: Spider Operator Company: Axis Mountain Technical Location: Various Job Summary
Axis Mountain Technical Inc. is a specialty light civil contractor specializing in geo stabilization, steep slope excavation, and mountain construction. We are seeking Spider Operators to join our team for the 2023 construction season. Axis performs work all over Western Canada, and every job is different from the last. The Spider Operator trainee will undergo an initial training period (typically a few weeks) to ensure competent knowledge of spider functions and operations. After training graduation, an operator will be qualified to work in the field under supervision. The in-field training process will continue until the operator has been deemed competent in all the different processes that the Spider can perform. This job is labor-intensive and will demand the utmost attentiveness in safety, a strong drive for success, and the willingness to operate in a team setting. The goal of all

  • Maintain the highest level of safety on the job site including but not limited to wearing required PPE at all times, even when working alone
  • Report accurately to supervisor on job progress, needs, and problems
  • Be able to listen to instruction and correction
  • Be able to problem solve and make small decisions quickly
  • Be able to function as a one-person crew
  • Express a willingness to learn and the ability to ask questions
  • Have a team player attitude
  • Be respectful and represent Axis Mountain Technical in a professional manner

  • Axis Mountain Technical is a 24/7 365-day operation. At times you will be required to travel and or work Saturday, Sundays, and holidays.
Required Skills and Education
  • Assess topography to find light environmental impact and safe travel path
  • At least five years experience operating equipment, especially excavators ( minimum of
5,000 hours in an excavator or equivalent skills)
  • Feel comfortable in equipment on slopes with drastic elevation changes
  • Needs to be able to set grades, layout footings, and perform simple math
  • Needs to be knowledgeable on functionality and operation of standard job site equipment (loaders, excavators, dozers, and skid steers)
  • Needs to be able to comprehend written and oral instruction
  • Needs to be proficient at plan reading
  • Must keep an inventory of job site tools and truck tools
  • Oversees daily maintenance of equipment (greasing, fueling, inspections, cleaning, and basic repairs)
  • Must anticipate material deliveries, orders, and job site needs
  • Has a moderate level of mechanic skills
  • Needs to be physically fit and able to hike long distances with weight
  • Has no fear of heights
  • Needs to have a good sense of direction and basic outdoors skills
  • Needs to be able to keep extremely detailed records of time and equipment used on the job
  • Needs to be able to keep extremely detailed records of daily job tasks completed
  • Needs to be able to assess job site risks and dangers immediately
  • Requires extensive experience operating tracked excavators on slopes and different materials such as rock, shale, scree, boulders, mud, and dirt
