The Manitoba Wildlife Branch is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Species at Risk Biologist (BL2).


Conditions of Employment:


Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Must possess and maintain a valid full-stage Manitoba class 5 driver's licence (without restrictions). Must be able to travel to and work in remote locations for extended periods within the province, travelling by various means such as chartered aircraft, boat, ATV, and snowmobile. Must be able to work outside regular office hours, as required. Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which may require moderate physical effort conducting field work (e.g. carry equipment and samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions).

Qualifications:

Essential:

A Master's degree in biological sciences, natural resource management, or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Experience with land management and conservation planning in respect to species at risk. Experience with non-game bird and/or other non-game taxonomic wildlife groups, including their ecology, management, and population surveys. Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience in initiating and completing projects. Ability to take initiative and work independently, and as part of a team. Experience in organizational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and meet competing deadlines, plan and track budgets, and prepare financial reports. Effective verbal communication skills. Experience in developing and maintaining effective cooperative working relationships with diverse groups including government and non-government agencies, Indigenous groups, industry, stakeholders, and the public. Strong written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to draft scientific reports, plain language documents, and materials for diverse audiences, including funding proposals, reports, recommendations, policy, and legislation.

Desired:

Knowledge and understanding of species-at-risk issues in Manitoba. Experience in interpreting and applying provincial and federal natural resource management and species at risk legislation and policy. Experience in supervising staff and training or mentoring scientific and technical personnel. Technical knowledge of geographic information systems, data analysis, and data management.

Duties:


Under the general supervision of the Zoology Conservation Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the implementation and administration of wildlife species at risk programs for the Section including birds and herpetofauna, representing the Department in deliberations, and discussions with provincial, federal and international working groups regarding the conservation and recovery of species at risk and their habitat. The incumbent also coordinates provincial involvement in avian monitoring initiatives, and administers monitoring and management programs for species at risk in Manitoba. The incumbent participates in development of policy and priorities for the Section and implementation of budget and staffing strategies to ensure delivery of Section objectives.
