Job Summary

Our team is actively seeking dynamic Specialty Arts Instructors for specialized arts programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the instruction of a comprehensive speciality arts program(s) as outlined by the Culture Division to meet the needs of participants and to ensure adequate safety while facilitating the activity.

Under the direction and supervision of the Program Supervisor, this position supports the delivery of specialized instructional arts programs to children, youth, families and/or adults in one or more mediums:

  • Woodworking (furniture design, fine woodworking, carving, cabinetry, butcher\'s block, wood sculpting)
  • Glass (glass blowing, flame-working, fused, cast glass, stained glass)
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and lead the delivery of specialized arts program(s) for children, youth, families and/or adults including demonstrations of proper techniques, use of materials and equipment and coaching of participants in the completion of high quality artwork or functional products.
  • Develop and submit for approval comprehensive program outline(s) in accordance with program objectives and expectations.
  • Determine materials, equipment, audio-visual, technical and other support needs for each program and submit requests for approval.
  • Orient and monitor participants and class activities to comply with the security, health and safety and studio policies and operating procedures
  • Train, test, monitor and oversee participant\'s knowledge and use of materials, tools and equipment. Including but not limited to:
  • Woodworking - the use of personal protective equipment, power and hand tools, wood handling, sculpting tools and knives and dust collection.
  • Glass - the use of personal protective equipment, glass and gas handling, cold working and hot glass blowing tools and procedures, annealers, kilns, gas equipment and tools, glass cutting, fitting and finishing processes and monitors for proper procedures.
  • Support the finishing of participants\' work due to course time considerations and/or experience as required.
  • Work as part of an instructional team including co-instructors and assistant instructors as required.
  • As required, oversee Assistant Specialty Arts Instructor, in program support including but not limited to supporting and monitoring participants\' use of equipment, preparation of materials and program set up and clean up.
  • Prepare materials and supplies, reference materials and resources for program delivery as specific to the program.
  • Initiate studio preparation and clean-up of materials, equipment and studio environment consistent with accepted standards and procedures. For Glass this also includes turning on/off the glory holes, charging furnace as required, preparing gas tanks and fittings, within accepted standards and operating procedures. For Woodworking this also includes emptying the dust collector as per the studio schedule.
  • Work with groups of up to 15 participants.
  • Support the objectives and philosophies of arts programs as established by the Culture Division through quality instruction and excellent customer and staff relations.
  • Communicate in an effective and timely manner in writing or voicemail with the Program Supervisor all aspects related to facilities, staffing, participants, equipment, supplies or anything that would impact the quality and safe delivery of the program.
  • Complete facility checks before each program starts and report to Supervisor.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of all registered participants throughout the program.
  • Policy and procedure adherence and provide quality customer service and information to participants and other staff.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Skills and Qualifications
  • At least 3-4 years demonstrating expert knowledge and experience working in Glass and/or Woodworking as well as the relevant conceptual background, techniques, materials and practices for instructing in those media/subjects:
  • Glass - Hot glass blowing processes, tools and techniques, Flameworking processes, tools and techniques, Fused and/or Stained glass processes, tools and techniques, Cast Glass processes, tools and techniques, Interdisciplinary skills and mediums applicable to workshops i.e. jewellery making
  • Woodworking - Furniture design, assembly and joinery, fine woodworking, carving and sculpting, cabinetry, wood theory, machinery, power tools and hand tools and associated woodworking materials
  • Post-secondary diploma, degree or equivalent in furniture design, fine woodworking, glass,
  • Must have a knowledge of and at least 1-3 years of experience in teaching
  • Working knowledge of and experience in an operating studio environment including equipment, materials as well as health and safety practices relevant to specific art genre
  • Experience instructing, monitoring and overseeing participants use of equipment, tools, and supplies
  • Ability to maintain periods of sustained concentration required for instruction and oversight of classroom activities for the health and safety of participants, staff and equipment.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills required
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an instructional team as per program requirements
  • Experience developing lesson plans with emphasis on skill development in the completion of high quality projects
  • Practicing artist in craft or artistic medium an asset
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR B certification by employment start date
  • High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification by employment start date in order to teach any children\'s programs
  • Employment offer is conditional upon receipt of a Criminal Records Search, Vulnerable Sector screening at candidate\'s own expense that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga
  • Must be confident teaching various age groups and skill levels
  • Note: Hours are not guaranteed. Hours are dependent on sufficient program registration.
Hourly Rate/Salary: 27.24 - 36.32
