Are you passionate about resource development and long-term planning? We're looking for a Tailings Forecaster to join our Fort Hills team and play a key role in shaping our tailings strategy.
The Specialist Tailings Engineer will play a key role in supporting strategic and operational planning by developing coarse and fine tailings forecasts over a three-year horizon for our Fort Hills site. This position is responsible for maintaining and updating the tailings model, conducting scenario analyses to support decision-making, and contributing to regulatory compliance efforts. The role also involves representing Tailings Planning on major projects, supporting stewardship reporting, and mentoring junior team members.
Minimum RequirementsDegree in Geology, Mining or Civil Engineering or equivalent with 7-10 years of experience
Strong knowledge of mining and tailings operations
Advanced proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Minescape (or equivalent CAD software), and Muk3D
Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with Mine Forecasters to develop integrated forecasts and plans
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to identify and articulate risks within the tailings plan
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop 0-3 year tailings forecasts (coarse and fine tails) for Fort Hills, minimum twice per year, aligned with long-term strategic planning
Maintain and update the tailings forecasting model to ensure accuracy and relevance
Conduct scenario assessments to evaluate trade-offs and support leadership decision-making
Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned projects; represent Tailings Planning on Tier 1/2/3 projects and contribute to ADEM Elements Documents (Stage 1-3)
Support regulatory compliance submissions, including Annual Mine Plan, NPRI, AER Dam Applications, and Directive 85
Develop and manage pond assessment scopes, including data analysis for Directive 85 annual submissions
Lead or support stewardship reporting for tailings-related KPIs
Mentor and coach junior engineers and/or students
Location and other Key Details:You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 - 6th Ave S.W. with occasional travel to our Fort Hills site
This is an office-based role, hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday with travel to site is based on requirement.
