This is permanent position. The Specialist \xe2\x80\x93 Shaft and Hoist will lead the application of complex risk assessment techniques/methodologies, such as: Bowtie Analysis, hazard and operability studies, layer of protection analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, and quantitative risk assessments. The Specialist shaft and hoist will drive change through Operational projects to improve efficiency and increase productivity in all Ontario Shafts. The Specialist \xe2\x80\x93 Shaft and Hoist is a business unit level operating authority for risk-based decision making for Ontario functional units.As a Specialist \xe2\x80\x93 Shaft and Hoist you will

  • Define, design, and deliver significant programs/initiatives for the Ontario Operations portfolio of operating assets, functional departments, and capital projects across all categories of risk (e.g. Safety, Asset Integrity, strategic, finance, operational, compliance, etc.).
  • Directly support the achievement of the organization\xe2\x80\x99s strategic objectives through the application of the risk management system, its associated processes and tools, in accordance with Vale\xe2\x80\x99s management model (VPS) \xe2\x80\x93 including the development/refinement of associated aspects. Establish and embed consistent practices across the portfolio that meet or exceed industry standards.
  • The Specialist will work with training departments and mines to develop proper site-specific training packages that ensure workers have knowledge and skills to perform their duties.
  • The Specialist will participate on shaft inspections at all sites to verify and validate conditions and standards.
  • Uphold governance requirements described in the organization\xe2\x80\x99s risk management policy and normative standards pertaining to risks that exceed Vale\xe2\x80\x99s materiality threshold. When governance/risk response is inadequate, the Specialist is responsible to initiate corrective measures.
  • Provide guidance and insight to key decisions impacting the business. Lead the application of complex risk assessment techniques/methodologies and directly support the business unit leadership teams in risk-based decision making.
  • Develop risk leaders within the operating units. Support the development of personnel to achieve the role-based competency requirements defined for the corresponding level of the organization.
About YouEducation:
  • Mine engineering degree or mine technologist qualification would be an asset but not required.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in operating mine shafts
Skills:
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques required.
  • Experience in high-hazard operating environment.
  • Leadership experience in leading teams and also the ability to influence levels in the organization including supporting corporate groups.
  • Strong Work & Business Management Skills (resource, planning & work prioritization management, results focused, finance & budgeting knowledge).
  • Expert knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations, International standards and Injury Management., Legislated Training Programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of process safety and critical control management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
