Visit nuclearsafety.gc.caAbout this Opportunity:The Engineering Design Assessment Division (EDAD) is looking for Specialists with expertise in the area of mechanical engineering to support the CNSC\'s mandate and mission. We provide regulatory leadership and expertise in the fields of mechanical, metallurgical, fire protection and civil engineering.Reporting to the Engineering Design Assessment Division Director, this will be your opportunity to provide the following key technical services within technical area of specialization:

  • Assess nuclear facilities\' compliance with applicable codes and standards to the area of technical specialty
  • Assist or participate in technical inspections at licensee facilities as subject matter expert (SME) or supporting the SME
  • Assess licensees applications and compliance-related submissions against regulatory requirements and applicable codes and standards
  • Provides assistance to other technical staff with projects related to area of specialization.
  • Prepare inspection and technical reports, inspection guides, procedures and other documentation, contribute to the development of regulatory documents, standards and guidelines
  • Represent the CNSC at national and international technical/scientific meetings, committees and organizations
  • Support pre-licensing vendor design reviews and reviews of the construction/operation licence applications for new nuclear facilities
  • Monitor and follow-up CNSC and/or licensee R&D
Essential Qualifications:Education:Bachelor\'s Degree from a recognized University in science or engineering, an equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge may be considered.Language Requirements: Various language profilesExperience:
  • Experience (REG5, 1 to 4 years, REG 6, 4 to 7 years) in nuclear, mechanical, materials and/or metallurgical engineering
  • Assisting in the (REG5) / Preparation and review of (REG6) scientific papers, reports and documents in one or more of the following areas of mechanical / materials engineering: analysis, design, evaluation or aging management
  • Basic (REG5) / Moderate (REG6) experience in project management and coordination
Knowledge (REG5 - Basic, REG6 - Moderate):
  • CANDU reactor design, operations and safety, systems classification
  • Aging management for mechanical components
  • Pressure boundary jurisdictions and nuclear power plants and the role of an Authorized Inspection Agency
  • The Canadian nuclear regulatory framework including the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) and its associated regulations, and applicable CNSC regulatory documents (i.e., REGDOC-2.5.2, Design of Reactor Facilities and REGDOC-2.6.3, Aging Management)
  • CSA N285.0 / N285.6 standards, General requirements for pressure-retaining systems and components in CANDU nuclear power plants / Material Standards for reactor components for CANDU nuclear power plants
  • Other applicable standards pertaining to pressure retaining components including ASME Section III, Section VIII and B31.1, and IAEA standards
Ability to:
  • Communicate complex ideas effectively to a variety of audiences both verbally and in writing
  • Work effectively in both office and virtual / telework settings
  • Develop and maintain relationships with different stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams

  • A post-graduate degree in mechanical / materials engineering
  • Knowledge of mechanical seismic qualification for structures and components
  • Participation in multi-disciplinary teams / projects, and reviewing / integrating multi-disciplinary findings
  • Representing an organization as a technical expert at national / international standards committees, conferences, and/or technical or scientific meetings
  • Experience assessing nuclear facilities\' compliance with its licensing basis, including applicable codes and standards
  • Professional Engineer or demonstrate ability to become a professional engineer
