The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist, Geologist (Area) to join our Exploration team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

In this role the incumbent will ensures effective exploration by applying technically and financially suitable methods in office and field studies which may represent a range of standard procedures or minor modifications thereof. Responsible for varied exploration assignments requiring full knowledge of one field of geoscience and reasonable knowledge of the interaction with others to plan and execute tasks of significant complexity and variability involving both internal and external personnel ensuring standard company (operating) procedures are fully known and adhered to. Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Project Geology- Coordinate, plan and implement exploration programs including, significant exploration programs including multiple projects and target areas for all aspects of Exploration- including area selection, prospecting, mapping, surveying, drilling, logging, sampling, interpretation, evaluation and reporting.
  • Techniques for geological mapping: survey and mapping of geology, photo interpretation, integration of satellite images, structural analysis, etc.;
  • Sampling techniques and sample preparation, methods of collection of rock samples, soil, stream sediment in various types of environment / climate and methods of preparation for chemical analysis / petrography;
  • Geophysics: capable of interpreting maps and sections obtained through various geophysical methods (i.e. magnetics, IP, gravity, EM etc.);
  • Interpretation of aerial photos and satellite images: interpretation of images to differentiate topographic features and structures and integrate them with field data;
  • Understanding of database structure: organizing and maintaining a database according to company standards;
  • Drilling: supervision, core logging, understanding of process, recovery, etc.;
  • Preparation of technical reports;
  • Familiarity with and an understanding of environmental laws;
  • Analytical methods: understanding of different analytical methods (i.e. ICP, atomic absorption, etc.);
  • Fundamental comprehension of the main mineralizing processes related to the formation of base metal mineral deposits;
  • Have a basic understanding of the important economic parameters used in the evaluation of a mineral exploration project;
  • Have the ability and agility to perform all field activities related to mineral exploration.
  • Provide technical leadership and input through:
  • Identify targets, analyze results and advise on course of action as exploration progresses
  • Provide sound recommendations to Management concerning the initiation, continuation or abandonment of exploration projects
  • To seek improvements to aid exploration success by conceiving and developing new models, methods or technical advances
  • To generate new targets within projects
  • Bring personal expertise to bear on projects. Contribute to team tasks.
  • Ensuring technical and QAQC standards are being adhered to.
  • Providing technical mentoring and training opportunities to junior professional and technical staff.
  • Assist in consolidating monthly expenditures/physical forecasts and budgets for assigned projects.
  • To ensure work is planned and implemented in accordance to Vale's health, safety, environmental and community normative documents and policies in compliance with local laws.
  • To prepare specific presentations for general evaluation of existing projects.
About You

Education:
  • Undergraduate degree is required
  • P. Geo., or P, Eng. designation is required
Experience:
  • 11-15 years of experience
Skills:
  • Knowledge of Exploration methods, strategy, technology, and methodology.
  • Knowledge of Ore Deposits, Magmatic and hydrothermal systems, Magmatic Sulfide deposits and deposit geology specifically Sudbury Basin geology, Voisey's Bay Geology, Thompson Geology.
  • Ability to effectively interact with DIPM and Base Metals peers.
  • Strong technical knowledge including practical aspects of exploration, drilling, geophysics, hole orientation, hole planning and steering, hole surveying and geotechnical technics.
