Annual salary: $ 127,900.00 - 161,800.00


Position Highlights



The Human Factors Engineering and Work Methods team develop and maintain >300 work procedures and tool


requirements for Line and Substation electrical trade work, perform specialized safety risk assessments, and provide safety,


operability, workability, and maintainability input to asset investments. We have an opportunity for a Specialist Engineer to


participate in a range of multidisciplinary, cross-organizational safety related work to improve worker safety at BC Hydro.


What you'll do




Act as and recognized as a technical leader / expert, preferably on Transmission and Distribution Line and associated
Work Methods, internally within BC Hydro and externally among like utilities in North America and be able to respond to


highly complex/sensitive queries related to work methods, tools and equipment and support large capital investment


projects.




Act as project manager / project engineer and lead high risk/impact/complexity projects or initiatives related to safety and
work methods with cross-functional, cross-organizational scope to final resolution.




Provide expert advice and counsel within BC Hydro and externally regarding the investigation of serious incidents,
emergent issues and application of new and/or specialized work methods relating to energized work on the BC Hydro


power system.




Regularly engage and maintain effective professional relationships at all levels with internal and external stakeholders
(including senior management) across the line of business and regulators to determine relative priorities, assess the impact


of work on others and resolve issues of concern.




Demonstrate regular high-level creativity / innovations with expert knowledge of the field in coordinating, developing,
evaluating, and implementing new design solutions, work practices, tools and / or equipment for work on the BC Hydro


power system.




Demonstrate leadership potential in leading a sub-function or small function of the team, and provide regular and high
impact downward mentoring, coaching, and development of sub-team members.




Understand the bigger picture of the organization beyond the technical details and be able to handle competing and
complex issues at their level and at least one level above, and be able to consider impacts to other groups outside of the


key business unit when making recommendations and decisions.




Be highly influential and drive results and resolution of high risk/impact/complex safety and work methods related issues,
while maintaining positive and collaborative working relationships with peers and groups outside of the key business units.




Look for and execute ways to continuously improve internal processes within the team and also recommend process
improvements within or outside key business unit.




Oversee and / or perform safety risk assessments of a broad range and technical nature for complex, high risk, high impact, and time sensitive emergent safety issues.




Oversee, develop and / or update and act as Owners Engineers on work methods and related work practices, policies,
rules and standards for work on the BC Hydro power system in accordance with internal established processes, regulatory


requirements, and industry best practices.




Proactively identify and resolve safety issues related to energized work on the power system.


Act as subject matter expert and review work of the team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy,
achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering and safety practices.

What you bring




The successful candidate shall have an Engineering degree (preferably electrical, integrated, electro-mechanical
engineering, then mechanical, civil and others) and a graduate degree recognized by universities in Canada.




The successful candidate shall have a minimum of 10 years of experience in a relevant engineering field (excluding co-op
terms) and be registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with the Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.


(EGBC).




Specialist/extensive technical knowledge on regulations, policies and standards, best practices and procedures related to
electrical safety, work methods, tools and equipment of at least 1 aspect of hydro-electric systems (preferably Transmission


and / or Distribution Line).




Excellent writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills are necessary to succeed in this position, with the ability
to translate complex technical information into clear, direct, and concise language to non-technical audiences (including


senior leadership).




Candidates with extensive engineering, technical, and operations knowledge of BC Hydro's business are encouraged to
