Annual salary: $ 127,900.00 - 161,800.00


What you'll do





Transmission Planning has a challenging opportunity available. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading


transmission planning activities for the South Interior region, focusing on the applicable portions of the regional transmission


system. The core function of Transmission Planning is to develop BC Hydro's near-term and long-term transmission system


plans to meet BC Hydro's future business need of providing reliable, affordable and cost-effective electric supply services to


the customers in BC, as well as to ensure Mandatory Reliability Standard (MRS) compliance with NERC Transmission


Planning Performance Standards (TPL-001-4), the WECC Planning Criteria, and other applicable standards.




Recognized as having technical specialization in Transmission System Planning, the successful candidate will be


responsible for managing all aspects of planning for their area, and providing expert advice and leadership for the planning


of BC Hydro's integrated transmission system. As an expert in their field, the successful candidate will be accountable for


guiding the team's work, and perform a key role in ensuring the quality of the work products, including formal checking and


reviewing of studies, reports, and memos. The work will include the investigation and analysis of a wide variety of complex


power system problems, and the proposal and evaluation of potential solutions.




Working closely with the other teams in Asset Planning (Transmission Planning, Transmission Operations Planning,


Stations Planning, P&C Planning, Analytical Studies, Interconnections, Engineering, and others), this role is responsible for


leading a variety of system studies, including annual system assessments, network integration transmission service studies,


system impact studies, and support of major regulatory filings such as Integrated Resource Plans and Certificates of Public


Convenience and Necessity for proposed major projects, as well as various other types of studies as needed.




With excellent communication, synthesis, and leadership skills, this position will also lead technical discussions with other


teams within BC Hydro, and also for key interactions with external entities as needed, including adjacent utilities, as well as


third party load, generation, and transmission owners. With excellent writing skills, this position will also play a pivotal role


for future BC Hydro projects through leading the documentation of studies completed by the team in reports and memos,


and in preparing responses to information requests, providing the technical content for future project scope and regulatory


filings, and in preparing and delivering presentations on the future plans. The position will also be a key contributor and co-

author of the methodologies, procedures, and processes used by the planning division.




The key accountabilities include:




Determines overall needs assessments and analysis of the transmission system, with a strategic, long-term focus. Provides a broad and demonstrated expert level of system planning expertise and leadership and is recognized as having
expert technical knowledge in these fields, for both internal and external activities.


Acts as project manager for multiple, long-term, critical strategic planning projects with a high level of risk and complexity,
providing authoritative advice for corporate-wide projects.


Recognized as an expert on standards, policies, practices and procedures. Provide mentorship and supervision for junior Engineers and deliver on-job training to EIT's. Lead and perform complex transmission system studies and develop long-range regional transmission expansion plans. Has excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrates the ability to synthesize complex topics. Fosters collaboration and a positive work environment and works to increase functional awareness of business
requirements within the planning teams and across BC Hydro.
Builds influential relationships with key management teams and departments across BC Hydro. Ensures a high level of diligence and discipline in order to fulfill the evidentiary requirements necessary to demonstrate
standards compliance.


Provides a high level of organization and scheduling to ensure that defined functions and timelines are adhered to.

What you bring




A recognized degree in Electrical Engineering, and registered, or eligible for immediate registration, and in good standing
as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC)


A minimum of 10 years of progressive transmission system planning experience. Strong hands-on expertise in power system analysis such as power-flow, voltage, rotor angle, small signal stability, fault
and electromagnetic transient studies (EMTP) and equipment specifications on Generator, Transformers and series


capacitor, Static Var Equipment.


Direct experience on large capital project initiation and project development. Experience in working under the NERC Mandatory Reliability Standards with demonstrated Bulk transmission projects
planning experience in North American.


Experience in working with shareholders on the Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity Applications and other
regulatory filings to the Utility Commission.
