Our Team:

Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world.

The Port Colborne Refinery was also commissioned 100 years ago on the shore of Lake Erie. Raw materials and finished products from Vale\xe2\x80\x99s Sudbury and Newfoundland and Labrador operations are transported to Port Colborne for processing.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist Engineer, Open Pit Mine Design to join our North Atlantic Exploration group in Sudbury. This role is responsible for coordinating overall open pit engineering and design matters on a project or multiple projects. This includes the review of and recommendations regarding all mine engineering solutions. The projects include FEL 1, FEL 2 and FEL 3 studies. The role will support their respective project leads from a technical mine design perspective and coordinate with relevant internal stakeholders to ensure strategic and tactical initiatives are embedded into the studies. This role adds value by providing extensive knowledge and a disciplined approach in the functional area of mining methods/design to recommend improvements that positively impact the safety, health, and business performance.

Your accountabilities will include:

  • Leads and actively promotes behaviors with Vale\xe2\x80\x99s safety goals for all stakeholders including employees, contractors, customers, and members of the community.
  • Accountable for achieving zero harm by participating in the design of safe working systems, site inspections and safety interactions in their project area and ensuring all follow-up actions are carried.
  • Influences project team members performance and influences their activities as necessary to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project team on strategies to ensure that goals and priorities are clearly understood.
  • Interfaces with other members of the Project Team and contractors to ensure no aspect of the project is overlooked or lags in progress and assists in the development and implementation of recovery plans.
  • Leads, co-ordinates and monitors studies and contractors within their responsible area to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Responsible for review and delivery of Open Pit engineering for the FEL 1 and FEL 2 studies as agreed by the Manager and respective Project Leads taking into consideration the full project lifecycle.
  • Manages and ensures compliance to project procedures including the management of project documentation and ensuring these are received, reviewed, commented, responded, and incorporated in project archives.
  • Ensures measurement of progress on all contracts for reporting progress to the Manager, North Atlantic FEL1 and broader team as required.
About You

Education:
  • Bachelor (or equivalent) of Engineering in appropriate discipline.
Preferred Certification:
  • P. Eng, Chartered Engineer, or home country equivalent.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 11-15 years of experience in similar subject area.
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Unwavering commitment to safety
  • A bias to action and a demonstrated history of delivering results.
  • Experience in managing FEL 1/2/3 level studies.
  • Operational experience in extractive industries.
  • Experience in Base Metals.
  • A strong understanding of requirements to support mine development and production operations in a surface operation.
  • Strong communication skills and development of concise documents and presentation materials.
  • Be creative, not only use past practices but promote new ways of doing things to maximize the value of our mineral resources.
  • Ability to present detailed and complicated concepts and information succinctly.
  • Ability to evaluate alternative options and recommend preferred solution while outlining benefits and downside risks.
  • Ability to work with various groups and gain alignment.
