With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.The OpportunityWe are currently seeking a Specialist Engineer, Mine Design to join our Early-Stage Projects team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.This position is responsible for conducting studies of deposits (brownfield and greenfield) of mineral commodities of interest to Vale, including mining project layout (general engineering & process designs), mining method selection, ventilation, geotechnical assessments, facilities assessment, hydrogeological, fleet selection and sizing, production plan, infrastructure, waste/tailings disposal, environmental and permitting, financial estimation of Capital and Operating costs.Additional in this position, you will;

  • Responsible for ensuring that best practices are applied to reserves assessment to give materiality, transparency, and confidence to internal and external resource reports in compliance with the main international codes NI43-101, JORC, CRISCO and SK-1300. Also responsible for providing support to Capital Projects Development (FEL 1, FEL 2 and FEL 3), Marketing, Strategy and Business Units as requested.
  • Inspect new and existing mining sites to determine the best ways to extract, transport and sell mineral commodities. This includes visiting sites in person and using maps and geological data to estimate material reserves, revising on-site infrastructure, logistics, etc.
  • Provide mining engineering and design services for underground mine studies, such as FEL 1, FEL 2 and FEL 3, and NI 43-101 / SK-1300 technical reports.
  • Coordinate mining engineering projects with the mining team and other engineering disciplines, such as processing/metallurgy, electrical/instrumentation, mechanical/civil/structural and architectural etc.
  • In collaboration with the Mine Planning & Design Engineers, oversee the preparation of mining engineering drawings and layouts.
  • Complete routine reporting and other documentation as required, as well as facilitating project reviews with associated stakeholders (e.g., Maturity Assessment).
  • Assist the Engineering Sr. Leadership with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Prepare mining equipment (mobile and fixed assets) specifications and assist with mining equipment procurement.
  • Prepare technical specifications and scopes based on input received from other disciplines.
  • Research and propose new technologies and engineering frameworks/methodologies to optimize mining projects.
  • Support assessment and audit of mining assets in process of M&A (national and international due diligence).
  • Perform Project Management tasks for capital projects, including liaison with contracted engineering firms.
About YouEducation:
  • Bachelor (or equivalent) of Engineering in appropriate discipline.
  • P. Eng. (required), M.Eng. (preferred).
Experience:
  • 8+ years (post P. Eng.) experience.
  • Experience in base metals and Nickel Sulphide deposits is required.
  • Experience in managing FEL 1/2/3 level studies.
  • Operational experience in extractive industries

  • A strong understanding of requirements to support mine development and production operations in a surface operation.

  • Technology management: researches and keeps knowledgeable about new technologies in their discipline. Always looking to use the most current technologies in their work.
  • Autonomy: works independently; leads development of technical guidelines; leads technical process/routines.
  • Direction provided: Direction to more junior engineers, EITs. Acts as technical authority.
  • Support received: seeks advice on very complex problems from internal/external specialists.
