Visit nuclearsafety.gc.caWhat You\'ll DoThe Engineering Design Assessment Division (EDAD) provides regulatory leadership and expertise in the fields of mechanical, metallurgical, fire protection and civil engineering. EDAD is looking for Specialists with expertise in the area of civil engineering to support the CNSC\'s mandate and mission.Reporting to the EDAD Director, the Specialist provides the following technical support in support of CNSC\'s Operations:

  • Assess nuclear facilities\' compliance with CSA Group standards N287, N289 and N291
  • Review and assess submissions related to nuclear facilities\' safety related civil structures, concrete containment structures and seismic design
  • Review and evaluate periodic inspection reports
  • Assist and perform field inspections
  • Prepare reports, guides, procedures and other documents and contribute to the development of regulatory documents and standards
  • Attend and participate in national and international technical and scientific meetings and organizations, as required
Essential Qualifications:Education:Bachelor\'s degree from a recognized university in civil engineeringLanguage Requirements:Various linguistic profilesExperience:
  • Experience (REG5, 1 to 4 years, REG6, 4 to 7 years) in one or more of the following areas civil structures and components: analysis, design, evaluation, construction, inspection, decommissioning, and/or aging management
  • Assisting in the (REG5) / Preparation and review of (REG6) scientific papers, reports and documents with a focus on civil engineering
  • Basic (REG5) / Moderate (REG6) experience in project management and coordination
Knowledge (REG5 - Basic, REG6 - Moderate):
  • External hazards to civil structures (seismic, impact, blast, high wind and flood)
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modelling of civil structures
  • Nuclear industry, including research, design, construction, operations and safety
  • The Canadian nuclear regulatory framework including the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) and its associated regulations, and applicable CNSC regulatory documents
  • CSA Group standards including N287, N289, N291, other applicable standards including the National Building Code of Canada
Ability to:
  • Communicate complex ideas effectively to a variety of audiences both verbally and in writing
  • Work effectively in both office and virtual / telework settings
  • Develop and maintain relationships with different stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams

  • Post-graduate degree in civil engineering
  • Civil engineering related to nuclear facilities
  • Recent experience with the construction of nuclear facilities
  • Knowledge of other codes and standards, and industry reports (CSA Group, NBCC, IAEA, ASTM, EPRI, COG, IEEE, ANSI, etc.)
