Job Description

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY



To assist the Special Education Resource Team in supporting the development and inclusion of children with special needs.

QUALIFICATIONS



Education:



University Degree or College Diploma in Related Field (e.g. Autism and Behavioural Science, DSW, PSW/ECE with experience working with special needs and autistic youth) or 2 years experience directly working with students and their skills development.

Skills and Abilities:



Sound knowledge of positive behaviour intervention, elementary school curriculum and models of inclusion and mentoring/autism coaching strategies. Knowledge of modelling & delivering Social Skills Programs. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member within the school. Strong organizational skills. Awareness and understanding of the Ojibway Language and Culture preferred.

Experience:



Experience directly working with students and their skills development. Experience working with children having Autism Spectrum Disorder. Experience working with children with IEPs & Behaviour Plans.

KEY JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES



In conjunction with the Special Education Resource Team, work both in and out of the classroom with children from JK to Grade 8 to facilitate the development, implementation and ongoing review of individualized education plans and other consultative services. To support Autistic students in and out of the classroom as well as develop and implement appropriate individualized programming ("table time"). Support a range of consultative service delivery options to support the needs of the child and to promote child participation and inclusion. Provide learning strategies and adaptations (e.g. observation, coaching, modelling). In consultation with SERT, assist in training/workshops specific to the needs of the school and students. Work collaboratively with community partners including Social Services, ECE and Recreation. Organize and participate in formal and informal assessments and consultations. Respond to needs of students with complex issues. To assist the Spec Ed Team in planning, development and implementation of the students' individual education plans, Behaviour Support plans and Safety Plans. To assist in direct intervention in accordance with the student's Behaviour Support Plan, Behaviour Intervention Plan and Safety plan, as required. To assist in the preparation of materials and resources in collaboration with the Special Ed Team. Develop trusting, co-operative relationships with students, families, service providers and other stakeholders. To supervise and assist individuals or groups of students during classroom activities, recess, lunch, field trips, bus arrivals and departures as required. Support self-advocacy and empowerment for students and their families. Provide support to classroom teachers, ECE and Education Assistants. Must be aware of and adhere to Health & Safety Policy Rules & Regulations, RFN policies & procedures and MKES policies & procedures. Carry out other duties as assigned. To assist students with personal and medical care which may include administration of medication, feeding, dressing, toileting, hygiene and assistance with mobility as needed. To attend professional development sessions/training as required. To work as an active member of the school team to ensure the safety and success of all students. To attend meetings as required.
